marriage is owned by the church, and it's not up the the government to decide what it includes. If the government wants to treat people fairly, they can do so under their own system. Infringing on the church is not the way to do it.

I actually agree with this guy.

Government should not be issuing "marriages" but "civil unions" with the same rights, advantages, and duties as a current marriage. Of course, such civil unions are totally secular and can include same-sex civil unions (that give the right to inherit from each other, and adopt together)

Of course, a church marriage should be totally irrelevant in the eyes of the law, and bestow none of the advantages of a civil union. It is, after all, a holy covenant between the couple and God. The state has nothing to do with it.

On the other hand, any church would be free to marry anyone they want, and to refuse marriage to anyone they want too.

I also advocate a transition period during wich any couple can present a marriage certificate and have a civil union certificate issued.

There. The sanctity of marriage is respected, and gays have the same legal rights as straights. Everybody wins.

P.S. In France, you have to marry twice - once at the church, and once at the town hall. The papers that matters are the ones signed at the town hall.

My first marriage was at city hall. We went, got our license, and had a judge there marry us. There was no church, or any sort of religiousness at all, involved. It was a completely GOVERNMENTAL situation, paperwork and all, and was recognized as a legal, legitimate marriage. Whereas, had we married in a church without that paper, we wouldn't have been legally married.

The government had its say then, and it had its say when I had to legally divorce that man once the marriage ended so I could marry someone else if I chose. Again, the church (any of them) had nothing to do with it.

The church doesn't own marriage. You overly-religious yabbos just think/wish it did.

Marriage is a sacrament celebrated by the church, in various ways.
Marriage is also a legal partnership with many established benefits and consequences protected by precedent and spelled out by law.
1st Amendment means the two are separate institutions.

Your church may not solemnize interracial weddings, but your hospital has to recognize them for the purpose of medical proxy.
