In 1939 france declared war on germany.
In 1940 france was conquered by germany due to a combination of incompetent french generalship, and cowardly french politicians who decided to save paris from siege by surendering the city. (once paris was gone, the french army recieved no further orders)
France continued to resist germany from 1940 to 1945, despite the periodic efforts of the german government to win over the french.

Throughout WW2 the germans maintained a puppet regime in france, The vichy republic.
Although the vichy government publicly professed alegance with their german masters, they nevertheless worked ceaslessly to undermine german control of france

Eh, it's a pretty soft-headed day for me, so I'm not quite grasping the finer points of this post, but let me ask one big question before I start deciphering it: What the fark does World War II politics have to do with today's politics? Europe and the European politics have changed a lot since the end of the war, and the losing countries realised what kind of despicable moves they made.

And I was kind of confused by all this new information in the classes when they discussed the bigger view of Europe in WW2, but didn't Germany like *invade* France or something? Germany had this, whatchamacallit, Flashy-War. Isn't it pretty weird to invade an allied country?

You know fuck all about the Second World War. Neither the legitimate government nor the country as a whole was allied with Germany. After the german Wehrmacht conquered France they put into place the Vichy government which answered to Berlin. Partisans in the french resistance waged an insurgency against the germans throughout the war and fought with american and british troops to liberate France. The Vichy government never had any legitimacy, you would do well to learn the difference between the people and the government that was forced on them.

How would you know? Have you ever even been to France? Do you even know anyone who is from France? If so, do you really think that they speak for the country as a whole?

And what the fuck is this about France hating christians? The majority of the citizens in France are christians. Do you honestly (I use that word loosely as RR is not exactly know for it's honesty) think that christianity is exclusively american phenomena, because you certainly act like it.

I'm so damn sick of hearing "this country hates Israel and christians" or "that country hates Israel and christians", especially when, more likely than not, you know fuck all about that country or it's attitude towards religion. RR is nothing but a damn persecution fantasy circle jerk, Grow up and get over yourselves.

From your name I gather you might be French, but I got the definite impression you should read up on the history of your country during WWII (and during 1870 and 1914-18, as it explains the war weary attitude of the French).

As it is now, you are almost as misinformed as the fuckwit fundy OP.

Euh, what I meant was, The Nazis blamed loosing the First World War on the German people at home, instead of pure military failure.

D Laurier seems to do the same thing, blaming the 'cowardly' politicians.

The thing is, France after the disasterous French-German war of 1870 became extremely beligerent, geared for a 'Revanche'.
This is one of the reasons for World War one. France managed to win this war, but the price to pay was the loss an almost complete generation of young men.

So, quite understandably, the pendulum swung the other way and France's policy became quite pacifist.

This, combined with army commanders who all had served in the Great War, believing that a future war would again favour the defender and an almost universal and understandable refusal to sacrifice another generaton of young men led to the fall of France.

Being English, I love the opportunity to take the mickey out of the French even more than I like to take the mickey out of Americans, but this comment is so ignorant that I must for once proclaim the French as my closest brothers and sisters in freedom and secularity.

As an American you shouldn't forget just how grateful you should be to the French. Let's take the troop count at Yorktown as an example: 8,000 American soldiers, 7,800 French soldiers and 29 French warships versus 9,000 British soldiers. Planned, defended positions don't get taken without either betrayal, long sieges or that level of professional, numerical advantage (and the battle was won through military skill and courage, there's no denying that).

France stood up to Nazi Germany as long as it could in 1940, given the flaws in the Maginot Line (ie invade Belgium and bypass it). The French Resistance (and French civilians) paid a higher price for occupation than any other Western European nation, and we certainly couldn't have made D-Day as successful as it was without their sacrifice.

[On the other side of the coin (in a dark sort of way), the Royal Navy finally got to sink some French ships in 1940, after a break of more than a century. That particular mess could have been resolved with better diplomacy, in hindsight.]

In summary: don't slag off France until you have some actual facts to back up your case.

20th Century history clearly not on the 'hoemskuling' curriculum then, waiting1. Even before Pearl Harbour, there was 'Vichy' France that was in cahoots with Hitler, and then there was the Resistance; to say nothing of the Free French forces: French pilots - along with Polish & Czech ones - flew (amongst other planes) Spitfires & Hurricanes, especially in the Battle of Britain. In 1940. There were French troops among our army too. PROTIP: oceanographer & naturalist Jacques Cousteau, during his time as one of the Free French Navy (combined with the Royal Navy in WWII) invented SCUBA gear, which is still the standard equipment for divers today.

Post-WWII, France built up their armed forces to what it is today: a navy that can certainly hold it's own against even the post-Warsaw Pact Russian fleet. An air force that is the biggest in Europe. And an army today, built on the basis of 'WWII? Never again!'. Only this time, you'll see French Leclerc tanks alongside British army Challenger IIs, and German Bundeswehr Leopard IIs.
