my son is in 10th grade here in central florida. He told me that they studied all religions fairly quickly, but when the teacher got to the islamic faith, he went over their doctrine line by line and even had the kids quote "there is no god but allah and muhammed is his messenger". He said that if he did not go line by line, he would not get an A. I asked, did you repeat the main statement (the above quote). He said no way!
My husband thought it wouldn't have been a big deal, but I was proud of him and told him so. I also shared with him that he stood his ground and God was pleased and the devil was disappointed!
We really have to prepare our children and teach them how easily the world can get us to cross that line......We must hold our ground!

Hahaha.
You know what I think? I think the school really did force your son to say that as part of their evil plan to persecute Christians, so he did, and now he has an A and a new allegiance with Allah. Yeah, that's exactly what happened.
Even if your kid was forced to say shahada, which I highly doubt BTW.
The problem would be...? Saying shahada without the intent to convert means precisely nothing.
Looks like bullshit, but just possibly true - I've known RS teachers spend a whole term on one religion, typically their own and usually Christianity in these parts, and maybe one or two lessons each for others. To avoid conflict of interests and preserve impartiality, RS teachers should really be atheists or agnostics (or just demonstrably capable of recognising the importance of secular teaching and resisting the urge to use the lesson as a free soap box with a captive audience)
"but when the teacher got to the islamic faith, he went over their doctrine line by line"
Line by line?
I don't think so somehow.
tres amigos, you arte simply lying. You will go to hell according to your own religion. Fortunately for you, your religion is a lie itself, and once you die, you will simply be dead forever. Live withit.

He probably wanted them to repeat it so they'd remember it for the test. Especially for a 10th grader.
We learned about Islam in 9th grade social studies, and even had worksheets about Islam, with questions like "If you were in an Islamic country, and took a picture of something/someone and they became upset, why would that be?" (Answer: because their religion does not allow graven images.) We didn't actually have to believe it, just know it for the test. Also, some teachers are really sticklers for detail. I just had to know the Five Pillars of Islam. And I can still remember four of them off the top of my head: (1. There is no God but Allah and his Prophet Mohummad. 2. Daily prayer five times a day. 3. A pilgrimage to Mecca if your circumstances allow it. 4. Give to charity. And one other one I'm missing. Thanks, Mr. Grimes!)
I'm sorry; my point being, of course, I agree with your husband that you're making it out to be a much bigger deal than it is, since he was probably just wanting them to remember it for the test rather than "indoctrinating" them.
"[...] and God was pleased"
How do you know? Did he speak to you?
"and the devil was disappointed!"
And you know that because God told you so? Or do you communicate with the devil, too?
Also, why don't you take your medicine any more?
Yes, because God forbid should we make any effort to bridge the gap between the West and the Muslim world, which would lead to understanding, which would promote diplomacy, which is the best path to peace and a big step in putting an end to terrorism.
But then, fundies always have to have an enemy, and if the Muslim world becomes our friends then they's have to get up off their lazy asses and find a new one. Though I'm sure they'll just turn there attention back to the gays full force, like they did when we quit "hating" the Russians.
You're lying. Or your son is lying. Nothing new for christ-stains to lie to further their agenda.
Has anyone noticed how these stupid women always mention their husband's doubt or calmness throught the incident? I feel pity for these men, watching their wives spiral into the abyss of ignorance.
Saying it in English with no Muslims in the room means nothing even if you were intending to convert, and less than nothing if you aren't. You need 1. a Muslim witness and 2. to say it in Arabic. And 3. actual desire to convert.
Having to memorize it for the test, which is probably what was going on, is not proof that the teacher is some kind of evil Muslim meaning to indoctrinate people, just someone trying to do his part to educate them about a religion that's Public Enemy Number One right now.
This happened at a public school in central Florida? Right. Are you only lying about this instance tres amigos, or is everything that comes out of your mouth a lie? You know where your god sends liars, right?
I honestly doubt that a school would do such a thing. Especially not in Florida.
Also, w00t @ my first submission!
@1BurningStake
The Fifth Pillar is fasting during Ramadan.
In order to make an opinion about something (good or bad), you have to know about it. I can safely say tres amigos knows nothing about Islam.
"Big deal. When I was a kid, I was forced to say religious crap that I knew was wrong even then. "One nation under God" my arse!"
I remember that crap, I got in trouble several times for refusing to say it, haha.
I think I agree with some of the others. The teacher probably emphasized Islam for a test. Most likely because it's become such a byword over the last 8 years. By teaching students about it, they're more likely to react with understanding than with fear when they hear the word "Muslim." That's really not a bad thing.
Bender Bending Rodriguez Thank you! I knew it had something to do with Ramadan, but didn't want to be wrong and give false information about it.
Welcome draco_nite ! I come here to read about the RR crowd and try to disable their false dichotomies and "important" talking points, myself. And to see what their latest problems are with our current President.
Doctrine Line by Line sounds like maybe he was made to repeat the five pillars of Islam.
Boo Hoo. Most other religions don't have that sort of thing going on which is why he had to do it.
Buddism has the 8 fold path, and that's the only one off the top of my head.
But, you cry, Christians have the ten comandments, and they weren't made to repeat them! Well, no, you don't. You guys go around happily killing each other in your holy book and in general going against it and reinturpeting it. Besides, The commandments say nothing of how to worship, just don't worship. So no, nothing like the pillars of Islam.
And going over that religion in depth in the state of the world today is a GOOD IDEA.
Is that... Could it be...
Lemme check with my reference sample.
*sniffs a whole Kent Hovind rant*
Yes, that's what I thought. It smells like bullshit.
Confused?
