Most "scientists" can not give you a reason why females have a hymen (which is a small covering of tissue in her vagina that causes bleeding upon your first time having intercourse). So given that and the fact that marriage is a covenant let's take a look at what is needed to seal a covenant - the shedding of blood.
So when a man and woman wait for marriage to have sex they take their covenantal vows before God and man then they consumate the marriage by having sex and blood is shed sealing the covenant. (Look at all the Old Testament covenants - look at Christ and His shed blood which began the new covenant - for examples.)
To me, that is truly beautiful! God is in the details! This is the "scientific" reason why women have hymens. Marriage and convenantal sex are not to be taken lightly. God does not take covenants lightly.

The hymen is actually supposed to protect the vagina from dust and dirt from entering, I believe. It's part of evolution.
Whales have hymens too. Do they share a "sacred covenant" as well? What about horses? Not only do the females have hymens, they are polygynous. So I guess the "covenental vows" don't preclude a male having several partners, huh?

Men have foreskins, which helps keep in precum to lubricate the penis during intercourse, as well as keep the sensitive head of the penis protected afterwards. It also has a large amount of nerve endings, helping stimulation. However, religious retards like to chop it off under claims like 'god told us to' or lies like 'foreskins are icky/dirty'. On the other hand, scientists without quotation marks around the title, especially the biological and medical kind (as opposed to chemists and the like) could tell you that it's not for some stupid blood ritual that was thought up millions of years after the fact.

@GreenEyedLilo: that's actually pretty common. A lot of hymens are torn through normal activity. Of course, given that they probably think girls should only learn to cook, clean and care for children, they probably think the activities that may lead to hymeneal rupture are all bad too.

I've heard some women have really strong hymens that don't break during sex, and really weak ones that break while bike riding or whatever.

Ugh. My father used this exact line of reasoning to try and convince me that "the homosexual lifestyle" was against God. The thinking was that "homosexuals don't bleed the first time they have intercourse, so a covenant can't be formed."

Little known fact, hymens tend to erode in active young girls! Neither myself nor any of my female friends recall actually having a hymen to BREAK their first time.
Honestly, I couldn't even tell you whether I've still got mine or not. But then, since I don't plan on fucking any fundies (sure, they've screwed the whole country, but there's no reason to make it personal...) it's not that much of a big deal to me.

A quick Googlethon can show you that there are girls born without hymens, or with exceptionally thick ones, or ones with strangely-shaped holes in them, or ones that are so miniscule they are hardly there. It can also give you the reason the hymen is there - it's a layer of crap left over from when the female genitalia forms during gestation. Also, not everybody bleeds the first time they have sex. I didn't, nor did a few others I know. There's probably millions who did and millions who didn't.

First, it't not a covering, it's just a crease in the wall of the vagina, and not everyone has it. Some tear it during sports.
If it's SO important to have blood on the wedding night, how come they don't bite each other instead, and drink each others blood, or something equally gross.

I don't like polygamy, thank you. I'd rather be married to one person at a time. And why is this bloodshed so important again? Me and my husband did not wait. However, we were together for ten years before we got married. That is twelve years ago, and we are still together. What would have changed if we had waited wit sex untill we were married?
I assume the hymen evolved as a protection against infection and dirt/dust in pre-pubescent girls since they aren't using the vagina for anything pre-puberty.
Nowadays most girls break it by the time they are old enough to be married by running around, horseback riding, that sort of thing. Intact hymens in girls old enough to marry are unusual these days, even if they are virgins.
I didn't bleed when I lost my virginity. I guess my marriage isn't sealed.
