atheism has caused far more death and carnage than religion.
I beg to differ. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god or gods, as such it has no tenets, preaches no dogma, advocates no actions. Quite unlike most religions, in that they have both tenets and dogma, and when those are either not adhered to or not believed then most religion advocate action against the apostate or unbeliever, usually in the form of maiming or death.
It is Dawkins type reasoning that motivates the scourges such as Stalin and mao
Neither Stalin nor Mao were motivated by atheism or evolution, they were motivated by the ideology of communism. They did not order their people killed in the name of atheism or evolution, they did it because it was politically expedient. They executed people either for percieve ideologiacal impurity, crimes against the state, or because those people could have posed a threat to them, or undermined their hold over the population. Ideologies have both tenets and dogma and they advocate action, something which neither atheism, nor evolution does.
Survival of the fittest! It is the perfect recipe for genocide.
The theory of evolution is not social darwinism. Survival of the fittest does not mean survival of the strongest, it means that the best adapted to it's enviroment is more likely to survive long enough to reproduce. Now please tell me how that is a "recipe for genocide"? If you are going to attack a theory why don't you at least bother to find out what it is that the theory states in the first place. Not what your agenda preconcieves that theory to state, but what it actually does state.
More than 100 million served
And how many have been killed in the name of religion? How many killed during the crusades for the crime of not being christian? How many killed during the numerous inquisitions because they refused to convert at swordpoint? How many killed in witch trials?
If you insist on asserting the benevolency of your religion then I'll glady point out the blood on it's hands. The dogma that lies behind those attrocities is the very same dogma that you adhere to, so don't dare try to claim that you somehow have the moral high ground. If your religion hadn't been dragged kicking and screaming into modernity then you would not doubt be gladly oppressing those you see as lesser than yourself and executing those who's theology differs from your own.
