The Italian government has been plunged into a constitutional crisis over the fate of a 38-year-old woman who has been in a coma for the past 17 years. Eluana Englaro was left in a vegetative state after a car crash in 1992. After a decade-long court battle, doctors reduced her nutrition on Friday in preparation for removing her feeding tubes, which her father claims would be in accordance with her wishes.
But in an extraordinary turn of events, the country's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, after consultation with the Vatican, has issued an emergency decree stating that food and water cannot be suspended for any patient depending upon them, reversing the earlier court ruling. On issuing the emergency decree, Berlusconi declared: "This is murder. I would be failing to rescue her. I'm not a Pontius Pilate."
Justifying his campaign to save Englaro's life, the prime minister added that, physically at least, she was "in the condition to have babies"

Yeah, a woman in a coma is gonna have babies. Someone will think it's normal and okay to fuck someone in her state, and then those babies will grow up financially and emotionally supported with a healthy view of the world.
*facepalm*
I can't believe some people.
Wow, this sounds eerily familiar. America went through this crap a couple years ago. The only difference is that they're trying to justify keeping her alive because she's theoretically fertile, which is a pretty perverse justification...
Who cares if she has been a fucking bedridden braindead vegetable for 17 years...someone needs to do the nasty to her so she can spit out some kids...
That what you meant dickwad?
Jesus Christ let her die with some dignity at least. :(
Maybe I should come over there and try to impregnate you...up your ass...
Maybe Berlusconi should get together with that nutjob whose (name escapes me) blog appeared on here a while back, postulating that a good "use" for brain-dead female patients would be to put them into pods and use them for breeding purposes with a few chosen "righteous" Christian men, to raise up a new fundie nation. (((shudder))
Berlusconi declared: "This is murder. I would be failing to rescue her. I'm not a Pontius Pilate."
Any attempt to rescue her failed in 1992. She's all but dead.

That's very, very creepy.
As an Italian I would like to apologize for inflicting upon the world a repeat of the Terry Schiavo fiasco.
I would also like to apologize for Berlusconi, but unfortunately he is inexcusable.
Former Senator Bill Frist, R-TN, declared that Englaro was merely resting, and invited her family members to admire her lovely plumage.
Yes, starving someone to death IS murder. I have no doubt that someone will try to deny it, but it is, no question. HOWEVER. No one who has been in a coma for 17 years is in good shape to "have babies", and this guy is a tard. Sounds like he's the one who's a vegetable.
physically at least, she was "in the condition to have babies"
Hey, she was already lying down and she never said "no"...

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!
So you're saying that her own wishes in this matter mean nothing, and that she should be kept alive against what she would have wanted just because she is still young enough to have children?
So who is going to step forward first to rape this comatose woman and help her fulfill her destiny?
The Good ole Coma Sutra.
Yeah, thats gotta be real hot...fucking a comatose girl..real great.
Fucker makes me ashamed to have come from an Island near there.
This is why Sicilians are better.
So let's say theoretically she was 65, removing her feeding tubes would be slightly more acceptable?
Would that then mean that fertile women (which Englaro may or may not have been) are worth more than than the infertile? That leads to a disturbing conclusion.
So...let me get this straight. You're saving her life, and pretending to be a hero over it. Not that she has any life to speak of, as she's just a glimmer of consciousness trapped in a shell...if that even. She is dead, for all intents and purposes. All that keeps her alive are machines, while the God you're pretending to serve is calling her name. And on top of that, the lame ass excuse you come up with, is that her body is capable of conceiving. So you'd take the body of a woman, and just...USE it to churn out babies for...whom? The husband, who no doubt would be appalled at the thought? Or just as a government Rent-a-uterus? The whole prospect of this makes me nauseous, but that little gem at the end makes me physically ill. I try and save this for special occasions, and I think this qualifies.
DIE IN A FIRE, YOU PIECE OF POND SCUM!
If anything, this woman deserves something to get her a dignified death more quickly, as opposed to starving her.
@Ranger Joe
"The Good ole Coma Sutra."
Does it make me a bad person if that made me laugh?
'the prime minister added that, physically at least, she was "in the condition to have babies" '
SICK SICK SICK....this fucktard (along with Pope Bendict & the Vatican patriarchy) sees women as nothing more than baby machines, even in a vegatative state. Fuck the Catholic Church....the church of hypocrisy.
Goddamn it. Not only do they have to starve her to death, instead of letting her go in decency with euthanasia, but now they're fighting to keep her 'alive'? Let her go already, you've put her through enough!
@949732
And not alive for her sake, either. Alive so they can use her to squeeze out a couple more babies. I mean, it's not like she's saying no, right...?
(Even sarcastically, I felt sick writing that...)
... in the condition to have babies."
No nasal congestion, no athlete's foot, no prominent abnormalities ... lots of good use can be made.
A woman in a coma? I have the perfect man for her!

I'm a horrible person, aren't I? Not as bad as Berlusconi, though. Which reminds me:

Lately he's been fucking teenage girls, but apparently they were too frisky for him. They tired him out quick. After all, he is in his 70s... Comatose women have a great advantage: they lie still, and don't toss around in bed like crazy...
For those wondering at the Vatican's involvement: mind you, they were silent accomplices in the Holocaust. Giving the nod to this is by far not their greatest crime.
Ma che cazzo, Papa Benedetto?! This is only justified IF the comatose woman manages to somehow wake up (the probability of this occurring is constantly diminishing with each passing day.).
Pope may be well-intentioned, but we must determine first if said patient is conscious enough to be aware of her surroundings. Which, given that she is in PVS, may be unlikely.
The last sentence made me nauseous. I want a medical opinion that a comatose woman would actually be in condition to have a baby. I'd think all the muscles are so atrophied that it (as it's merely a body kept artificially alive, it's not really a "she" any longer) will not be able to provide nutrition to a fetus.
If it was her wish to not be wasting away, decade after decade, costing a fortune for nothing, then she ought to have been taken off life-support some 15 years ago at least.
There is no "her" to rescue anymore.
Oh, and by the way, Italians are renowned as extra-bigoted Catholics, They dare not even fart without asking the Vatican's consent...
"the country's prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, after consultation with the Vatican"...
You had sex with an underage female, Silly Silvie, so no wonder then, that you had to 'consult' with similar-minded people, eh...?! [/hyper-sarcasm]
And why Mario Monti is the prime minister of Italy today. As in not you .
I could rip his eyes out, tear open his throat and drain his blood, throw his carcass into a pit of rabid wolves, and burn the remnants, and it still wouldn't be enough to express my loathing.
Confused?
