Quote# 5870

I was thinking about evolution and the many scientific laws it violates, and I realized the biggest law it violates- Murphy's Law. Murphy's Law is that 'if anything can go wrong, it will.' You would have to agree with me that Murphy's Law is a fundemental aspect of everyday life- the bread pops out of the toaster, and falls on the floor. The light turns red as you pull up to the intersection. The plane is delayed due to bad weather. The computer is contaiminated with a virus because you were downloading a bunch of sh*t of a Kazaa. Murphy's Law is the law of chaos, of disorder. Everything goes downhill. However, evolution has to go against this disorder in the universe. That's the point- something from nothing, life form nonlife, order from chaos.

Wait...I thought creation was out of nothing?

Aside from that, Murphy's Law isn't really so much a law - it's just a humorous way of looking at the universe. Lots of things that could go wrong don't.

And technically, that's not Murphy's Law. That's Finagle's Law. (Murphy's Law, in its original form, is thus: \"If there are multiple ways to do something and one of them will lead to a catastrophe, someone will do it that way.\")

Yeah, why is it EVERY stop light I stop at is red?

It's a little known fact that every piece of toast has been on the floor at least once.

And the only way to get anywhere in a car is to make several right turns.

And he really still uses KaZaA?

The force is strong in this one. The brain on the other hand...

Guess what? Evolution does follow Murphy's law. havn't you heard of birth defects and genitic abnormalities being born? Of course most don't live so I'd I'd like to congragulate you on making it this far.

Actually, one could argue that evolution DOES do this; mutations IS something going wrong, it just so happens that sometimes things go wrong and it helps.

Uh. Murphy's law is a joke.

Since when is Murphy's Law a scientific law? I must have missed that memo.

If life treats you that bad, it seems the gods are not on your side.

The red light you run into is turning green for someoen else so does that prove evolution true?

If you are trying to talk about entropy and are just too stupid to know the phrase understand that the earth is not a closed system...ah fuck it.

Just when I thought they couldn't get any more stupid ...

Murphy's Law is a fallacy, which is the appeal to probability. That is, the probability of something bad happening always approaches 1.

Just because something bad CAN happen, doesn't mean it WILL happen. Sure, over a million and one trials it may happen, but it may not as well! Lighten up, will you?

4/7/2010 10:50:41 AM

D'oh repost.

4/7/2010 10:55:17 AM

That was my guess as well. A misguided reframing of entropy and 2nd law and all those retreaded arguments.

If entropy worked the way it is presented in those arguments ice could only melt and never form.

Sadly, as stubborn as facts are, belief is far more stubborn.

Actually, Murphy meant that if there is a wrong way to do something, someone will do it that way. He wasn't talking about random unfortunate happenings.
