This is just an opinion. Judaism, Christianity, Islam, all consider the Old Testament a holy text. Mainstream Judaism takes it with the biggest grain of salt (considers it in light of the customs and beliefs of those times, not as a rulebook for modern civilization) and Islam takes it the most seriously. While Christian Fundamentalism is heading slowly but surely in the same direction, it is nowhere near as barbaric (yet). A gay couple, or outspoken female teacher, could live openly in a city in the bible belt, and wouldn't even think of trying that in the most tolerant of the Muslim states.
