Quote# 5921

Atheism IS a religion because you're acknowledging that you are a part of a group of similar thinking people who all believe in one common truth (or at least you think it's truth): God is not existant. I don't see how you can't call it a religion.

So you and I are of the same religion because we both believe in air?
As someone once said, \"calling atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color.\"

3/6/2006 5:32:30 PM

is communist a religion then? or geek?

11/26/2006 1:32:27 AM

Jon Almighty

haha stupid christians, think they know how to use philosophy

theist (god) suffix a (without) a-theist (without god)

Our lack of faith in God is what gives us a free choice of \"religions,\" I, for instance, am an objectivist. That is my \"religion\" and I can ONLY have this religion because I am an atheist. get it?

12/21/2006 12:16:08 AM

First, atheists in general don't sit around comparing their views with other atheists, so I honestly don't know how many of my views are shared by other atheists.

Second, atheists absolutely don't have to share views about the cause, nature or purpose of the universe, which is one of the definitions of a religion.

The only thing any two atheists may have in common is their belief that there is no \"God\" as the world typically defines the role.

Would the church of atheism get tax breaks?

Would we be able to take holy drugs and hang round with like minded individuals down the beach every Sunday and talk about the miracle of life or whatever else we wanted to?

Church of Gravity

In addition of being a proud member of the Church of Atheism and a sect of social democrats, I attend annual meetings of the Esoteric order of the Dagon, because (like alot of other people) I think that the shortstory, "Dagon", by H.P. Lovecraft is one of the best cosmic horror stories ever written.

Also, as the chairman for the cult of "people who think cats are cute" I wholeheartedly support the views of OMGZERGRUSH!

So the people who don't believe in Thor also consitute a religion? The Athorism.

Absolute truths are a thing of religion, however. Until I find evidence for the existence of any gods, I refrain from blindly believing in any of them. That is not a truth, that's just an oppinion.

Have you seen an Atheist Bible?
Have you seen an Atheist church?
Have you seen the Atheists Commandments?
Do you own a dictionary?
Have you EVER looked up "Atheist" or "religion"?

I believe coffee is better with sugar, as with millions of others.

Now, who will join me in the prayer of the Holy Union of Caffeine and Sucrose?

"God is not existant"

By jove, I think he's got it!

"I don't see how you can't call it a religion."

Easy. Atheism is not a religion. See? And for my next trick, going to the toilet, unzipping, getting my old feller out and - by the simple method of relaxing - pissing. Whilst doing something equally easy: breathing.

(*puts kettle on*) I'll join you in Holy Communion. But in my case it'll have to be tea - I can't stand coffee.

@Anon-e Moose

"But in my case it'll have to be tea - I can't stand coffee."

The horror!
Most of western civilisation was built on coffee damnit! Come toward the pot, it's good for you, it'll keep you going... yeess, that's it, just a little closer. First cup is free you know.

Worship the bean I say! WORSHIP THE BEAN!

According to dictionary.com

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.

Hmmmm.... NONE of those apply to me saying "I do not believe in any gods." The closest one is definition 2, but there's no practices involved so I can't really count it

There is indeed a group of like-minded people who all believe in one common truth: you're full of shit.

Gah. I couldn't bring myself to type 'similar thinking' as an adjective, even to take the piss out of the idiot.

We have no common:

Warped sense of historical reality
or Mindset

Atheists are not locked into a book, a political dogma or a lifestyle. We're the free people, we're the folk that got in charge when the American Constitution and all it's predecessors were produced.

We're not ever a connected body of thought. It's, unfortunately our failing. We can't control or direct a population to anything as we DON'T THINK WE'RE IN CONTROL OF EVERYBODY ELSE.

11/29/2011 11:48:15 AM

I don't belong to a group, I'm just me.
All deities are seemingly non-existent.
Until tangible evidence of any gods or goddesses surfaces, I'll live my life as if none of them exists.

Where's the religious parts in that?

11/29/2011 1:55:57 PM

In order to have a religion, you have to believe in a deity(or several). Sorry, you lose, but take a home version of the game.

atheists are on the path to ultimate enlightenment. Step 1 , clear you mind of all gods that it may be empty for TRUTH to seep in. Step 2, try some pasta , relish its goodness, even macaroni and cheese will do , or spaghettiO's .Step 3 consider that pasta MUST be directed by a vast intelligence. Its multitude of shapes show intelligent design to hold the sauce. Step 4 acknowledge the SUPREME one, FSM creator of all thats noodly.

I'm a sign painter.
I clean my brushes RELIGIOUSLY!

That's as close as I get to it.

I'm on a forum...we believe Final Fantasy is one of the best games series there is. Does that make us Final Fantasians?

11/29/2011 10:46:20 PM

Quantum Mechanic

And not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Most folks I know don't care enough about religion to call themselves atheists.

2/24/2012 7:11:50 AM

Wow, that's a lot of religions you belong to there Zergie.

(above screename should read 'Anon-e-moose')

I'll try an espresso-sized cup of ordinary instant (say, Mellow Birds), if ZOMGERGGEDDYLEE here pays my back-taxes, backdated & with interest, seeing as this cunt-for-brains fundie is so insistent in saying that 'Atheism IS a religion', therefore the onus is on him to pay what's due to us, as - by definition - we now have tax-exempt status.

"I'm on a forum...we believe Final Fantasy is one of the best games series there is. Does that make us Final Fantasians?"

I like playing id Software's games, especially those involving the Strogg. Does that make me a Quaker...?!

(*Charges up Dark Matter Gun; points at self. Prepares to pull trigger...!*):

Often Partisan

Conservatism IS a religion because you're acknowledging that you are a part of a group of similar thinking people who all believe in one common truth.

4/4/2012 6:12:38 AM

It's not a religion if you don't believe in any deities.

4/4/2012 9:37:31 AM

So if we believe we should wipe our bottoms after taking a poop, is that also a religion?

It would explain a few things about religion, but no.
