Your question at the end begs the answer that God is a cruel taskmaster who takes pleasure in crushing the defenseless humans for enjoyment.
You say this as you guys allege he creates illness within the body to test faith, and an epidemic to punish a small subset of people. And that he flooded the world because we weren't behaving as he desired. And then there's Job, if I recall correctly, that he dicked with on a wager with the devil.
...and so it probably does to everyone who has a flawed picture of what God's true nature is like.
No, the Bible paints a rather clear picture of him. malicious, capricious, fickle...
We are the ones who wronged him. Any rights we had when he created us are forfeit.
Rights are not forfeit at a whim. The ones who wronged God are long dead...but he chooses to take it out on humanity as a whole. Not to mention, why did he leave that tree there in the first place?
If he chose to send everyone to hell, then we would only be getting what we rightfully deserved.
For what? Fucking...like he designed us to do? Living? Or just being a descendant from Adam and Eve? The concept of sin is ambiguous at best...just the way the church likes it. Make it feel like you can do nothing right by God, and suddenly, you have scads of people looking to be saved by the Church's magical mojo.
However, that's not what he did. He sent his one and only, perfect, son to die a humiliating death, which pays the price for all the wrongs we ever did against Him.
Unless you don't believe in him. Or are gay. Or believe in a different God. Kind of a pissant savior, no?
He only asks one thing in return in order to receive his mercy and free gift, and that is to take him at his word.
Which gets you in the church doors. And then you're subjected to a gauntlet of litmus tests. "You vote Democrat? You're not a true believer! You're gay? Unbeliever! What? Keeping a ten in your wallet? Heathen!"
So, to that I say; Yes, God is good. He is so good, as a matter of fact, that it is beyond our wildest imagination.
Eternal torment is not good. Period. There is no justification whatsoever. None. Even for a person who obliterated all life on the planet, he should have the opportunity to redeem himself. Otherwise, it's simply sadism.
The sum of his goodness is way beyond any human's comprehension, which is why people pose questions like this to begin with.
I repeat the Battered Wife syndrome sentiment here. "He hits me because I did something wrong. I shouldn't have done that...he really loves me, and is a good person...it's my fault."
We have one choice. Trust him and take him at his word, or not. Our choice has zero bearing on whether or not he actually exists, what his character is like, and what rules he has laid down for his creations.
So he's a dick, he's an unapologetic dick, and the only way to get into his clubhouse is to dance like good little puppets.
