[On an article about polygamous family]

This is really sad and pathetic. Society isn't evolving but rather slipping into an immoral culture. For those who believe in the Bible as the Word of God (which amounts to over half the people living in the USA), a polygamous marriage of this type is worse than adultery. While biblical polygamous marriages always occured between one man and several women, it was something specific to the time and culture of those events. Those days are long gone. At the time of Jesus, polygamy of any kind was not acceptable to both Jews and Romans. If God wanted a women to have two husbands, he would probably have created Eve first and brought two men to her.

So them living in a consensual arrangement (a marriage no less) is worse than cheating on each other? Wow.

I don't pretend to understand polygamy (my mind doesn't work that way), but what does it hurt me if other people practice it (and are not hurt by it)?

"it was something specific to the time and culture of those events"

Like religion, actually.

So the culture can change, but the culture can't change?

polygamy works fine if no one act's like a jealous prick.

"If God wanted a women to have two husbands, he would probably have created Eve first and brought two men to her."
You got it backwards, God wants Men to have many wives. Isn't that right King David?

... um... polygamy is a man having more than one wife. A woman having more than one husband is polyandry.

What, exactly, is this pig-ignorant pillock talking about? And if it believes the bible literally, as a good fundie should, it seems, why is it restricting the dictates of the old testament to things that happened in the past and saying they should no longer apply?

pleasepleaseplease change the tick box to read sentient, not human...

@Joules: multiple wives is polygyny, multiple husbands is polyandry. Polygamy is the generic term -- it's just that polyandry is exceptionally rare.

a mind far far away

Fundy morality-hatred of those different than you, intolerance, murder, pedophilia, refusal to accept logic and reality, you know, all the things that jesus said to avoid.

Liberal morality-tolerance, peace, kindness, mercy, you know, all the things that jesus taught.

So, tell me again, who's more immoral?

For those who believe in the Bible as the Word of God (which amounts to over half the people living in the USA)

It's actually closer to 75%. But you have to ask yourself, how many of those interpret the bible in the same way that you and your fundy ilk do. Not nearly half. The majority, if not outright liberal, are at least moderate, or prefer a mystical view of the bible, which leads to a liberal morality.

If it's consensual, there's nothing I can see wrong with polygamy.

It just seems you're picking and choosing your beliefs, once again. It's okay for multiple wives in the bible, but it's not okay for everyone else? Double standard pls.

It always disturbs me how fundies like to pick and choose which practices from the Biblical days apply to the current world.

It's okay to wear mixed textiles, but not be a homosexual. Likewise, it's still important to never ever even CONSISER having sex before marriage, but it's no longer okay to have more than one spouse.

Seriously, who are they hiring to pick and choose these things?

Anyway, here's something to consider: adult consent. You see, it's this evil idea of the liberal christophobes, and means that intelligent, and informed adults should be allowed to make decisions regarding their lives as long as they don't encroach on the rights of others in the process.

You know, many Christians don't take the christian bible to be the literal words of god, but to be divinely inspired. These do not mean the same thing, and many people who say they believe the former actually believe the latter. And of course, there's the matter of interpretation of the words themselves. Look at all those Christian sects!

Oh, please, this is bullshit (and so are the people who believe that polygamy should be allowed but polyandry shouldn't).

"Cheating" is a concept derived from treating love as money; so loving two people means you love both less?

Is the love that you have really the equivalent of a wad of cash? Besides, sad and pathetic is really a ridiculous term to be used by someone who, most assuredly, only has one husband; apparently she's too ugly to have more I AM JOKING ABOUT THAT LAST SENTENCE KTHXBYE.

Also I'm really not getting the association between polygamy and ephebophillia. The stupidity is astounding.

"For those who believe in the Bible as the Word of God (which amounts to over half the people living in the USA), a polygamous marriage of this type is worse than adultery."

Actually your bible in a sense does support pologamy. Look at king Soloman.

"While biblical polygamous marriages always occured between one man and several women, it was something specific to the time and culture of those events. Those days are long gone. "

Thats the excuse you always give about the bible. So it's only okay if the men in the bible did it? Please...

I really fail to see what's wrong with polygamy as long as it's consensual across the board.

Oh for fuck's sake, read what you have written. I can understand contradicting one's self in the same paragraph (even though it is pathetic) but contradicting yourself in the same sentence? Illiteracy does not help your position, idiot. Though if you tried to get literate, you wouldn't be what you are.

2/23/2009 7:11:26 AM

?!?!

That's polyandry, dear. Learn your vocab before you start spouting off nonsense.

"over half the people living in the USA"

Such a precise statistic! Obviously well researched!

I find it even more ridiculous that this stooge seems to understand moral relativism on cultural grounds for a split second and then immediately reverts to the usual nonsense about Jaysus and the Buybull.

ooh, one polygamous family means society is crashing? Certainly not all the good christian protests at funerals, christian divorce rates, christian violence, christian crime, christian lying, christian stupidity and christian bigotry have done anything to show you this compared to one singular, completely not plural family

You're just afraid of letting your slave wife have another husband because then everybody will know that you have a small penis.

2/23/2009 8:40:58 AM

Oy Vey!

Polyandry is not my thing, but hey, if everyone involved is a consenting adult...

Mind your own business.

2/23/2009 8:42:07 AM

In other words, people following their brand of superstitious bullshit is an affront to your superstitious bullshit when their superstitious bullshit contradicts your superstitious bullshit. Since it's an affront to your superstitious bullshit (and really, just about every form of human behavior is), you want it made illegal.

Listen Church Lady, what consenting adults do with their "naughty parts" is their business. Try minding your own.

Oh, the hypocrisy.

2/23/2009 9:32:55 AM

Polygamy is emotionally unnatural and extremely damaging to most women, and to their children as well, particularly girls, who grow up brainwashed to believe that it is their "place" as women to repress and sacrifice their every emotional impulse to satisfy some bastard's desire to have a houseful of women to screw, all under the guise of religion. But relatively few people practice it, and most people in the western world are disgusted by it, so to say that society is slipping into immorality through polygamy is a ridiculous statement.

2/23/2009 9:44:30 AM

????

So men can have more than one wife, but women can only have one husband? Isn't that a little unfair?
