*Prayers for Bobby*

Since I always watch/read something before judging it...

First, let me say I think Bobby killing himself was a tragedy. Gay or not, it's always sad when someone decides to take their life.

I think the movie was horribly offensive. I expected homosexuality to be portrayed in a positive light, so no surprise there. But the mother was portrayed as a total witch just because she voiced that God didn't make anyone that way, and that Bobby needed to try to help himself be cured. They even said it was her fault he decided to commit suicide. Again, that was a horrible tragedy, but it was in no way Mary(the mother)'s fault. She was just saying what she knew to be true. Her grief for her son even forced her to right for gay rights, because she so wanted to believe her son was in Heaven.

Like I said, I knew this was a pro-homosexual movie, so I wasn't at all surprised when they showed it was a "good" thing. But to show the mother as a total nut just because she loved God was too much!

Too bad you obviously go into it with your mind already made up.

Illuminatalie

she loved God was too much
If she really loved God that much she would have loved her son much more. So much more, that she would not fail to see the heartless ignorance that is inherent in her brand of religious legalism.

Yeah, we should treat every gay person like shit! That's what Jeebus wants!

She's a witch, and so are you.

Or maybe they showed her as a total nut because she was a total nut.

Or maybe you're just projecting.

Now you know how we see you guys.

Mudak

I've known far too many witches who are too kind, too honest, too good-hearted to have this kind of comparison be made against them.

If the mother were a real witch, she would've opened her heart and mind to her son, not driven him to suicide.

Elphada

No self respecting witch would say that.

@Mudak: Thank you.

I believe you've missed the point of the movie...

Though I haven't seen it yet, what I've read seems to indicate the theme of the movie is that faith based in rigid dogma is ugly, cruel and destructive, but faith based in love and acceptance is a beautiful thing.

why do these fundies believe that their faith is justified, even when it is harmful? Their religion actually teaches them that you should follow the rules, even if it ends in suffering for you or someone you love? really? ick...

atheism please!

Antichrist

the mother was portrayed as a total witch
She rejected her son over some bullshit that was written down thousands of years ago, I would say witch is rather mild.

to show the mother as a total nut just because she loved God was too much!

At least she expresses sorrow over the suicide. And her defense of the mother may be flawed, but it's not off the wall.

I wonder if Olga realizes that what took place in that movie is very real to a lot of families.

People tend to look down on adults with imaginary friends, especially if their devotion to said imaginary friend gets people killed.

My 2nd cousin just came out as gay. His parents (who I always thought were fairly normal people!) looked to the bible for guidance and came to the (totally justified by the bible) conclusion that forsaking him and cutting off all ties with him was the right thing to do.

Fortunately they're the only assholes in the family and the rest of us are standing by him.
