I've found that NEVER watching any of those Discovery or History channels, etc... when they deal with God or the Bible is an excellent way NOT to have a heart attack! I end up screaming at the TV screen "WHAAAT! Are you CRAZY!? What's WRONG with you!???" I always expected the men with the huggie jackets to show up at my door. So, I don't watch those channels anymore when the subject is God, the Bible, Prophecy, Jesus, etc...

Why do I get the picture in my head of this person standing in front of the tv, jumping up and down with fingers in their ears, yelling, lalalalala I cant hear you.?
Oh no! I heard a version of the story I don't agree with!
I listen to/watch/read things I don't agree with for several reasons, like to get an idea of what other people think (God forbid I know something about people different from me!), to get a better idea of why I think what I do, or, horror of horrors, to see why it might be logical to change my position, among other potential reasons.
I never watch the History Channel any more, either.
But that's because they don't check their facts, not because they blaspheme.
Huggie jackets? Aren't you a bit confused? Huggies are for your ass, dickwad, and if you scream and piss yourself to where you have a heart attack and need the assistance of someone else to change you, your problem isn't with the programs.
Yes, My Abba's Child. History is baaaaad, historians are nasty people who try and find out what REALLY happened? Go back to reading fairy tales, much safer for you.
Oooohhh, she would of just freaked when Vision (our multi-religion channel) showed a documentary on "The evolution of God".
Actually it was really interesting, explaining how god has evolved from animal spirits up to what we have today.
Just because you're paranoid, MAC, it doesn't mean Huggie Boy isn't out to get you. I think you should expect a visit at any time, and be prepared to welcome the calming meds.
Do you really expect the History channel to tell you the earth is only 6000 years old? Those channels are usually extremely respectful of religious beliefs; I've never heard them say anything to imply that God does not exist. Apparently fundie Bible literalists can't stand an intelligent explanation of the Bible as metaphor, as it was intended to be.
I have the same problem with University Challenge.
I've been known to leap up and down screaming "It's Hamlet, you fucking morons" at the screen.
Still better for my blood-pressure than watching any of the currently-in-vogue-at-the-BBC documentaries about religion, though.
"I end up screaming at the TV screen "WHAAAT! Are you CRAZY!? What's WRONG with you!???"
Y'know, screaming at inanimate objects is one sure sign of insanity. As is having 'Imaginary Friends' outside of childhood.

I am so shocked.
I find myself in agreement with someone from RR ,though admittedly for the completely opposite reason.
Like others here have mentioned the Biblical programmes I have seen on these channels accept far too much as 'gospel truth',when real historians and archaeologists have shown that much of it is speculative or myth at best.

Good thing as your bullshit capacity is full
I don't think much of the History Channel. Their fact-checking is dubious, they repeat urban legends, and they use theology as evidence. The Discovery Channel is mostly advertising masquerading as science--all technologic toy crap--with only the odd good program.
Ironically, I agree about the "Vision" channel--a religious network-- occasionally having some great factual documentaries about history, culture, sociology, and science.
Meh. History and Discovery are both kind of bunk anyways. History has always been the World War II Channel (even though they have a separate Military History Channel!) until recently, when they started showing reality bullshit that didn't have anything to do with History. How is "Ice Road Truckers" or "Ax Men" historical?
Discovery has the same reality bullshit too but at least their name doesn't specifically disallow it. Still, I think both (and TLC, and A&E) are in decline. :-\
But if they started turning the Science Channel into some generic reality lifestyle network, then we'll have problems. >:-(
A better alternative is to seek out that which you don't agree with, and try to discover what parts of what they say and why they think so are true.
That way you don't end up thinking 'everybody's crazy but me', and you get insight into truths you don't know about.
But hey, look at me, talking to a Fundie as if he were reasonable!
By the way, how ARE Anni, Bjorn, Benny and Agnetha? And how does being the child of four people work out?

Awwwwwwwwww, it wants a hug.

Then I suggest you never watch BBC America, if you know what's good for you - least of all for Sir David Attenborough's series of epic "Life" documentaries.
And Sir David Attenborough is an acknowledged Humanist, so...!
I tend to skip all those stupid Bible code, etc. shows. That's not why I started to watch the History Channel - I wanted to see ancient battles analyzed, I wanted to learn the theories and such about things like the Antikythera mechanism, and I sure was interested in hearing about how much was lost when the library at Alexandira was destroyed. Maybe you need to skip all the things that don't agree with your narrow worldview.
Confused?
