[Science has] Lots [to offer], actually. It lets you be wise. It lets you be the one who can know it all. It frees you from authority and lets you make the rules. It lets you do all those things your desires and whims wish and only have a hangover to have to answer to. Unfortunately, that doesn't make it the truth and you'll still have to answer to the real authority in the end.

Real authority? Are you talking about the invisible, mass murdering, egocentric, insane, hypocritical fairy in the sky that you idiots believe in?
"Drunkenness has lots to offer, actually. It lets you be wise. It lets you be the one who can know it all. It frees you from authority and lets you make the rules. Change that one word and it makes a lot more sense.
It frees you from authority yet you'll still have to answer to the real authority in the end?
That make no sense! How can one be both free of authority and yet still have to answer to it? Looks like someone created a paradox.
It's all about the authority, isn't it? You can't just be a free agent; you have to have someone cracking a whip.
Man, that's a poor and desperate sort of life. It's almost like you have to have some sort of eternal reward at the end because you know that someone said you're going to get shafted in this life so you may as well get used to it.
to be serious - science frees you from the primitive, though sophisticated, theories put together by people straining their limits to try and understand WHY. Scientists, and the rest of us, have the same obligation. If you're a theist, a deist, it is to use your god-given abilities to make sense of and impose moral order, on the universe and all in it. For atheists and agnostics, it is to use the gifts our genetic and cultural heritage bring us to do the same.
Fundies WASTE their humanity by cleaving to the superseded beliefs of the past that try to explain the universe etc. To hold to the mores of a bronze age culture is perverse.
Sorry to have gone on, and so portentiously, but sometimes quips aren't satisfying.
"It frees you from authority and lets you make the rules."
I don't get how fundies think not believing in the sky-pixie somehow frees non-theists from having to answer to society and the legal system. They claim "if you don't believe in god, you are free to rape, murder, steal..."
No. You are ABSOLUTELY NOT free to do those things any more than theists are free to do them, which, of course, they aren't. Society and the legal system are still the authority and still make the rules. Rape, murder, and theft are still against society's laws.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
