Quote# 60299

The "peace" sign is from witchcraft, It comes from a ritual they do when someone from a "church" upbringing wants to join a coven. The witches get antsy and a little uneasy when someone that wasn't raised in witchcraft wants to join, so they take a cross (usually made out of clay) and make the initiate turn it upside down and break the sides down, to signify the rejection of Christianity. This gives the coven "peace" that the person is 100% into it. That's why the symbol is also referred to as a "broken cross' by witches. So remember this the next time your kid tries to tell you it's just a cool hippie symbol.

Lies for Jesus are still lies.

Yeeaaaaahhhh... no.

I used to be pagan/wiccan back in my early 20s (back when I was playing the game What Religion Do I Want To Belong To) and I've never heard of this.

BTW, are they talking about the V shape one makes with one's first two fingers, or this one?

It's too bad Ready4it hadn't read this: http://www.docspopuli.org/articles/PeaceSymbolArticle.html

If s/he had, the above comment would not have been written.

What, aren't you gonna throw in "I know this because I was a 99th Degree Coven Master like, way back in the seventies, man! I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!"

Well, something like that, anyway.

I say it's made of the "^" and the "|" characters which are used commonly used as text delimiters. So obviously it is a holy symbol for the Sacred Church of ASCII.

See I can make up shit too.

Since I have a great love for paganism and witchcraft, I only wish that they could claim such a noble symbol as their own creation.

Now admittedly I'm not a witch, but my conversion was signaled by the elaborate ritual of "I'm staying in bed today. Go to church and I'll meet you at breakfast."

As a Witch, I am disgusted by this horrible and ridiculous lie. Next, they'll be telling their kids that video games will zap them with deadly bursts of electricity.

Wrong, you moron. I'm a witch and I've never heard of your explanation. Plus, we're rather funny about announcing who we are but we can spot a fundie a mile away. We do not need a ritual for somebody raised in the church since a high percentage of us were actually Christians at one point. Please do your homework and stop embarrassing the human race with your made-up BS.

One other thing, ready. Are you one of those folks on RR who believe the Wiccan Reade is "do they will" conveniently leaving out the "An it harm none?"

If you were to take a cross of clay turn it upside down and break 'the sides down' then all you would be left with would be a straight'long piece' and two smaller boken off 'arms'.

As someone who has studied Witchcraft for almost a decade, I can assure this person that there are zero ties between the peace sign and any sort of initiation into a particular tradition of the Craft.

In fact, in most Pagan circles, your prior religion isn't even discussed, although many people who turn to Paganism after de-converting from Christianity have a lot of questions and concerns, mostly about hell. There certainly are not any tests to prove you hate another religion.
