Pope claims condoms could make African Aids crisis worse
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 17 March 2009 14.57 GMT

Pontiff's remarks on first visit to continent outrage health agencies trying to halt spread of HIV and Aids
The Pope today reignited the controversy over the Catholic church's stance on condom use as he made his first trip to Africa.
The pontiff said condoms were not the answer to the continent's fight against HIV and Aids and could make the problem worse.
Benedict XVI made his comments as he flew to Cameroon for the first leg of a six-day trip that will also see him travelling to Angola.
The timing of his remarks outraged health agencies trying to halt the spread of HIV and Aids in sub-Saharan Africa, where an estimated 22 million people are infected.
The Roman Catholic church encourages sexual abstinence and fidelity to prevent the disease from spreading, but it is a policy that has divided some clergy working with Aids patients.

Which is why condoms have been proven to prevent spread of STDs.

Does Benedict live in an alternate universe?

Come on, people. Why does anyone listen to this guy?

3/19/2009 8:45:17 AM

Oh look, another delusional and evil pope spreading disinformation... surprise surprise. At least Pope Palpatine looks evil, it's hard to tell with some of them.

J.A. Ratzinger is (and was always) an ignorant idiot.

"Why does anyone listen to this guy? "

The only people who do are catholics.

Pope Benny, playing the role of a medieval monarch, is irrelevant in the 21st Century.

[Insert here a snarky comment about pope's lack of insight, receive a reputation amongst the protestants]

3/19/2009 8:54:26 AM

I'm sorry, what? How does this make any sense?

3/19/2009 8:55:59 AM

Yes. Yes he does.

Dio Fa

It is better to die of a horrible disease than to prevent future Catholics from being conceived. Rape, you ask. If the woman won't produce children for us, then it is up to the men to force the issue.

It is better to die of a horrible disease than to have sex that is not sanctioned by the Church. Our parishes in Africa do not bring in the cash flows needed to keep our Pope dressed in dresses and stupid looking hats. A steady stream of marriages ensures that the local parish priests get a cut, from which the cash flows upward to the Vatican.

Besides, this epidemic is not affecting clean-living white Catholics anyway.

This makes me so angry. Just like when I got married in the Catholic Church we had to go to marriage instruction from a bunch of celibate, unmarried men who thought they had all the answers to marriage problems.

Well at the time we thought they were celibate, I guess we know different now, for some of them anyway.

No one should listen to anything spewed from the mouth of the catholic church.

3/19/2009 9:06:48 AM

I hate catholic church. It's the best evidence that christianity too is dangerous nowadays.

3/19/2009 9:14:38 AM

What an asshole.

3/19/2009 9:20:19 AM

I guess the pope wants millions of Africans to die of AIDS, spreading it even more as they die.

When Galileo was arrested, it was not so much for his heliocentric beliefs - they didn't wave the instruments of torture under Copernicus' nose - but because he tried to reinterpret scripture to agree with his science. Now the Pope turns the tables; he reinterprets science to agree with his religion.

Listening to, taking notice of, and commenting on (even negatively) the medieval shit spouted by Ratzinger and his cult of boy-botherers just offers validation.

It would amuse me no end if his comments went unreported or (better) reported but completely uncommented on by anyone.

Jezebel's Evil Sister

Q: Why do catholics think an old man who has taken a life-long vow of celibacy and who has no education in health is qualified to provide advice on human sexuality?

A: They believe in miracles.

3/19/2009 10:17:20 AM

How the hell could proper protection make a disease worse?

3/19/2009 10:18:07 AM

Since condoms only stop 99% of the problems, they don't work at all and actually make the problem worse. This is the ravings of a madman, nothing more.

3/19/2009 10:20:29 AM

a mind far far away

Some catholics don't even listen to him. Some catholic groups are upset over B XVI's statements about condoms not working to stop AIDS.

3/19/2009 10:22:31 AM

Complete garbage.

It's terrifying that this idiot has so much influence in our world.

3/19/2009 10:28:03 AM

Holly cow of purity! Insanity, the name is Ratzinger.

3/19/2009 10:47:44 AM

I love how Spain has put the tongue out to him. They're sending a million condoms to Africa to protest. HA-ha!

3/19/2009 10:50:10 AM

Yet he didn't say a damn thing about the witch burnings.
