"Don't believe in God? You're not alone."

The above "inspiring" phrase is popping up on billboards around the country. My wife just told me that one will be going up in Dallas, so I guess I'll have to start carrying a barf bag in my car for the drive to work It's being brought to us by the wonderful folks at http://freethoughtaction.org/ On their site they encourage people to also express this sentiment on t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc. Satan must have a big ol' smile on his face right now.

By the way, interestingly on the way home I heard a news report in which they said a recent Newsweek poll showed that 20% of atheists and agnostics pray EVERY DAY.

"Newsweek poll showed that 20% of atheists and agnostics pray EVERY DAY."

I call bullshit.

Wow, a POLL! That's proof for me, 20% of atheists/agnostics must pray. The poll said so.

I imagine that if someone said the same thing about passing churches or Christian billboards, Tres would cry discrimination and go on and on about hateful atheists. Atheists showing support for one another? Apparently that's barf-worthy for religious folks...

3/27/2009 7:10:43 PM

So... You're saying that 20% of atheists and agnostics aren't atheists or agnostics?

"Newsweek poll showed that 20% of atheists and agnostics pray EVERY DAY."

To whom are we alleged to pray?

"... a recent Newsweek poll showed that 20% of atheists and agnostics pray EVERY DAY."

I see. And just who do they pray to - "To Whom It May Concern"?

Better than all the pictures of bloody fetuses and weird babies on every damn highway sign when I have the awful task of driving through Wisconsin.

Seriously, your cheese is amazing, but lay off the clumps of cells. I'd probably go more often if the billboards didn't look like medical manuals.

"I guess I'll have to start carrying a barf bag in my car for the drive to work"

You can have some of the ones I carry around with me for when I'm forced to listen to people like you spewing your fundie garbage.

Then look at the road instead of billboards and bumper stickers!

I wonder what people think of *your* bumper stickers, Tres. I'd be shocked if you didn't have some.

As for that poll, someone got something very wrong someplace, that's for damn sure.

It was a radio report. Tres probably heard "pray", but "prey" was intended. I know I kill my own food. Delicious.

Now, about that little lie you told there at the end, you know you're going to hell for that, right, sugar?

So if 20% of atheists/agnostics pray (I will echo: to what exactly?), somehow that makes the other 80% of us wrong or somehow deals us a blow? Petty "so nyah" argument.

I get tired of seeing babies (fortunately we don't get the fetuses or anything here) on billboards (especially the "God's ultimate pride and joy: human life" one with one of those disproportionate baby-in-giant-hands photoshops). I don't fucking like babies, they're not cute, and the arrogance doesn't make me more amenable to the idea of a god. And you know what? I just roll my eyes or ignore it and keep driving. If people want to pay to put that up, it's their right. I don't like it, but I have no need to go freak out over it because I disagree (even if my disagreement actually has a rational basis).

Thanks for the heads up on that website. I need a new t-shirt.

By the way, just whom do you think atheists and agnostics pray to? Joe Pesci?

I should be facepalming at the willful stupidity and thinly veiled hate of this post, but honestly, any negative emotions it may have been able to evoke in me were dashed by the overwhelming joy I felt upon seeing that the poster knows that the phrase "every day" is two words! O frabjous day! Calloo! Callay!

I can't begin to describe how awful it is to be bombarded with illiterates who claim to do things "everyday."

Also, for the record, I pray to Lou Ferrigno. Just for the hell of it.

"To whom are we alleged to pray?"

Well, according to my excellent sources (IE: Fundy posts on this site) we atheists/agnostics pray to Satan, Allah, Baal, and any assortment of pagan gods. Man, I love doing research the fundy way!

Burning Stake

I'm agnostic. While I wouldn't say I "pray" everyday, I do occasionally take a moment to sit and reflect on my day, or my life. I wouldn't call it "prayer" so much as "meditation" or a "quiet momement in my day." I wonder if that's the type of "prayer" this study means, or was inclded; not to mention that it's probably most of the agmostics doing the actual praying. I wouldn't think that a real atheist would spend a lot of time actually praying.

I'm an agnostic theist and I pray. But if anyone claims to be an atheist and then prays anyway... talk about unclear on the concept.

"And just who do they pray to - 'To Whom It May Concern'? "

No shit, I used to open my public prayers with this line when I worked Summer camp in BSA. We were told we couldn't mention any specific deity or religious sect so I thought it appropriate.

The poll is so poorly worded as to be worthless. Take question 12, you had to chose between these four statements:

God had no part in the evolution of humans from lower life form.

God guided the process of evolution of humans from lower life forms.

God created humans pretty much in the present form sometime in the last 10,000 years.

Other/Don't know.

The only answer an atheist can give is the last. The true answer, 'God had no part in the evolution of humans from lower life form' is worded to pre-suppose God exists.

To everyone who's asked to whom atheists and agnostics pray:

As the names imply, Athe and Agnos, respectively.

There's a few churches in the valley I live in that have big reader boards on some of the busiest roads here. I'd love to see one that's non-christian.
