How can the gov't use an influenza pandemic to control people? Taint vaccinations provided by public healthcare with mind-control rays? Put consciousness-altering nanobots in Tamiflu? Bend the government to the will of The Big Corrupt Surgical Mask Industry?

Fine, go to Mexico and have a ham sandwich.

I was wondering how long it would take before all the conspiracy theorists started coming out of the woodwork on this one.

There is no need to invent a pandemic flu to scare the population. We alreay have the threat of global warming and a free falling economy, both threaten our way of living. Just raise the level of graveness in the media on either of them, that would get people more scared.
Oh, wah-ait a moment. Maybe THIS is the Rapture, only the pure ones are getting it and thus are removed to heaven... It's actually more believable than people getting wooshed up in the middle of ordinary life. :-p

The 1918 flu outbreak had a mortality rate of 5% and killed 25 million people. The one that hit the Phillippines in 2007 had a 10% mortality rate. Care to play the odds?

I do not believe in the sun. I distrust all government.
I do not believe that this "sun" can cause melanoma's or that this affects humans.
This a scare tactic used by government and it's agencies to instill fear and gain greater control over the population.
The media does it part in this propanganda by sensationlizing the story and adding to it. They will use images of ignorant people wearing surgical or other nose coverings pretending to remove "melanomas."

I completely agree that the media is responsible for sensationalizing and blowing stories like this out of all proportion just to get ratings. However, wearing a mask when you are sick is NOT ignorant at all. People in Japan do it when they know they have a cold or flu, and we should do it here to just out of respect for our fellow man.

Meh. The media isn't doing a great job of reporting on this, and it *is* coming across as "EVERYBODY PANIC!" -- but I have no doubt that this has the potential to be a huge fucking epidemic. I'm hoping it fizzles out.

Wait...wait... You just pulled a conspiracy theory...out of skepticism? WTF?
4/28/2009 10:05:09 PM
Yeap media have blown it way out of proportion. But that's about the extent of it.

Seeker in the Dark
The saddest part of all this is, people like this claim to be critical thinkers simply because they disbelieve everything they hear or see, regardless of evidence, as opposed to the "brainless sheep" who actually do at least some research before forming an opinion.
I know my father is like that, for instance. The funny thing is, he is a hardcore atheist who believes everything can be explained scientifically or else it does not exist, but whenever scientists claim something, he's all "Bullshit! These scientists keep lying all the time to scare us and keep us under control!"
What to do with that?

He's right. There is no pig flu.
It's the pig fly we need to worry about.

I believe it happened. Why? Because my close friend got it and he was gone for a week and after he was so weak he couldn't participate in gym for two weeks. And fluenza viruses are rna viruses, which makes them easily mutate.
