Because then atheists would actually have to consider the possibility of a superior being, and then they aren't the supreme beings of the universe anymore. Its a pride thing.

What's a "pride thing" is fundies' inane refusal to accept that they are as much a part of the natural world as every other animal. They can't stand the thought that they are descended from apelike ancestors; heck, some of them still haven't even gotten over the loss of having their world at the center of the universe! So if you want to talk about "pride," fundies display as perfect an example of hubris as any that ever was shown.

Done that, There may even be several. That ANYONE on Earth knows of such a being is bullshit, specifically all who put themselves above others because of a claim of knowing.
Yet to meet an Atheist that claims to be a superior being, neither have you. Otherwise we'd see them standing at pulpits telling people how to live
In the immortal words of Popeye:
I YAM WHAT I YAM!
Um, besides, I know my morals are superior to those of your 'superior being'.
This statement isn't completely fundie. It just doesn't really understand much of anything about atheists.
For one, I'd consider the idea that there is some infinitely great and powerful being in the universe that actually cares about something as ultimately insignificant as me incredibly arrogant. Yet, most theists seem to believe this.
And I don't say the existance of any "superior being" is impossible. I don't say that I'm even 100% certain that there isn't a God. I just find the chances of a God existing incredibly low. However, the idea of aliens existing somewhere in the universe that are superior to human beings is not nearly so improbable. I would not say that I believe they exist, but it's certainly a possibility I'd be willing to consider.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
