Quote# 62658

Dear Margo: Our daughter started college a year ago, and we’ve noticed during her visits home that she’s not the sweet, innocent girl we sent away for higher learning. We raised her with strong Christian beliefs, but lately she’s saying that she’s joined an atheist club on campus and is questioning everything we taught her. Now my husband refuses to let her in the house and is threatening to turn her in to the FBI. I’ve tried to cure our daughter and reconcile with her, but nothing seems to work. I’ve prayed over her at night while she sleeps, enlisted friends in a phone prayer tree and even spoken to my priest about the possibility of an exorcism. I’m at my wits’ end. How can I recover my daughter and keep her from hell? — God-fearing

You've got to be a joke but just in case you aren't: It sounds like she's already in Hell.

I’ve tried to cure our daughter [...]

And she didn't taste so good?

El Guapo

I'd recommend a frontal lobotomy. This will keep her from having all those nasty thoughts.

I'm not surprised at this really, parents tend to get scared when their children "fall out of line" as far as spiritual beliefs go.

I know that when I converted to Islam shortly after 9/11 my mom had contacted the FBI and asked them to monitor my phone conversations with the people that I was learning Islam from as she felt that I was getting into something bad and was afraid that people I was talking to were trying to recruit me or some shit like that.

She told me this about three years after I got out of the religion.

Kid, she's an adult now. Now, go rest and put the phone down.

Poe. Has to be.

"hello, FBI? yes, my daughter has converted to atheism. please come arrest her. hey- HEY! stop laughing!"

5/26/2009 11:06:32 AM

She is being rebellious? Then follow your own book...

take her out and stone her to death...for her own good of course

Allegory for Jesus

Another case of innocence/dogmatism lost in the process of the edumacation.

Also: probably Poe.

Yeah, it's hard to keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paris.

If it's not poe, I bet she's having sex and drinking beer too.

Mister Spak

"Now my husband refuses to let her in the house and is threatening to turn her in to the FBI."

I'd like to have a recording of that phone call to the FBI, and listen to them try to figure out what she's being accused of.

Zeus Almighty

See, this is why girls should be married off at 13 and kept barefoot and pregnant until they either die during childbirth or their ovaries stop producing.
This fancy college stuff is the ruination of many a good christian girl.

5/26/2009 11:30:17 AM

Ummm, it's not illegal to be an atheist. The FBI will probably arrest you for wasting their time.

5/26/2009 11:32:23 AM

We have to understand, here -- to these Fundamentalist Christians, there is no difference between an Atheist and a Muslim.

And since they already equate Islam with Terrorism, it makes perfect logical sense (to them) to call the FBI.

"Wowowow"? Isn't that a silly Filipino game show?

This couldn't be any more Poe if it shouted "nevermore!"
