I'm not surprised at this really, parents tend to get scared when their children "fall out of line" as far as spiritual beliefs go.
I know that when I converted to Islam shortly after 9/11 my mom had contacted the FBI and asked them to monitor my phone conversations with the people that I was learning Islam from as she felt that I was getting into something bad and was afraid that people I was talking to were trying to recruit me or some shit like that.
She told me this about three years after I got out of the religion.
