The guy with this bumper sticker was Australian, the picture comes from the article explaining how he was hauled before the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal (basically a court for discrimination and hate crimes/speech) and spanked by the law for $12500 in damages paid out to the lesbians he offended who took him to the court!
Ah I love Australia! Where people like this don't get to hide their bullshit behind an untouchable Bill Of Rights. Here in Aus our rights are only protected by common/legislative law so we can have anti-discrimination legislation that works!
A Bill of rights would be nice but it seems enshrining rights in regular law over constitutional is more practical. Also for those wondering, it is a defence against discrimination or hate speech charges if what you say is demonstrably true, so you can criticise without the thought police knocking.
Here's a Summary from the link:
"An Australian Anti-Discrimination Tribunal has found a notoriously homophobic gun lobbyist guilty of 'inciting hatred against homosexuals' with his car bumper sticker.
The sticker, which reads "Gay Rights? Under God's law the only rights gays have is the right to die", caused several local lesbians to take outspoken right-winger Ron Owen to court.
Two were awarded AUS$5,000 and a third awarded $2,500 in damages.
The tribunal also demanded a written apology from Owen. "Ron Owen is entitled to be a homophobe and he is entitled to publicly express his homophobic views," said tribunal member Darryl Rangiah. "That much is required in a society that values freedom of thought and expression. However, there are limits.""
Also, Yay Anti-Discrimination Tribunal! So useful, I would suggest to all Americans to lobby to get one in your country! Slap down these fools!
