If all evidence points to A, it must be B.

No, no. God didn't lie. Those person who wrote the Bible lied. As a fictional character, God cannot lie, or do anything else. God IS not therefore he CANNOT do anything.
Anyone who believes the Bible to be infallible hasn't read the Bible, is an idiot, and/or doesn't understand what the word "infallible" means.

Allegory for Jesus
God didn't have to lie about anything for something in the Bible to be false. The only people who needed to lie were the human beings who claimed that their own words were the word of God to begin with. In other words, in light of actual evidence to contrary, it is very damn likely that those mortal human beings, for whatever variety reasons, were wrong. What this says about God is up to you to interpret/handwave.
But, yes, your religions pretty much were made up out of nowhere. Sleep tight.

"I believe that the bible is the infallible word of God. To try and say that Genesis 1 is false is to say that God lied."
ORRRRRRR that the Bible IS NOT the infallible word of God, it was written by people who were trying to figure out what God thought and you in fact don't really know about God as you think you do.
Just because someone claims to speak on my behalf and is a complete lying douche doesn't mean I am lying by association.
6/30/2009 11:08:38 AM
-So- close, but so fucking far.
6/30/2009 11:34:34 AM
Stumbling logic based on an unwarranted assumption.
6/30/2009 11:44:34 AM
"Well, I believe that the bible is the infallible word of God."
Why do you believe this? Are you aware that there are over 1,000 direct verse contradictions? If verses directly disagree with one another, then at least one of them must be wrong. How, then, is it infallible?
"To try and say that Genesis 1 is false is to say that God lied."
The entire Genesis creation story is false. And according to the Bible, your god lied dozens of times in both testaments. I don't think that the biblical authors were attempting to deliberately mislead people with the Genesis story; I just think they were trying to offer explanations for events they could not at the time understand. Some parts of the Bible were obviously written to be read as fiction... the authors probably had no idea that large numbers of people, such as you, would be so gullible as to accept them as reality.
"To say that God lied is to say say he is not perfect."
As I already noted, the Biblical god lied numerous times in both testaments.
"To say God is not perfect is to say that he is not God."
Why? A god doesn't necessarily have to be perfect. Your god, assuming he exists, is as far from perfection as can be imagined.
"To say that God is not God is to say he doesn't exist."
6/30/2009 12:20:06 PM
No, we just say God didn't write the bloody thing, men did. The question of God's existence or otherwise is a separate philosophical issue and not dependent on the Bible.
6/30/2009 12:26:21 PM
Aaaaannnnndddd he's almost there!
6/30/2009 1:09:02 PM
"To try and say that Genesis 1 is false is to say that some bronze age Arab goat herder lied."
6/30/2009 1:45:05 PM
Well, not so much "out of nowhere"... there's this thing that Humans are endowed with and it is called an imagination.. you should look into it.
6/30/2009 1:54:30 PM
I consider that you needlessly tarnish the reputation of God by stating that He was responsible for the bible. The bible was clearly written by a mentally impaired and thoroughly rabid man or bunch of men. So are you suggesting that God was responsible for that steaming pile of bullshit?
6/30/2009 1:58:25 PM
That is, essentially, what we are saying. Yes.
6/30/2009 3:12:30 PM
"By the way, I know quite a few Christians who don't take everything in the Bible at its literal word. They're still Christians, believe it or not. Why?"
Because that particular meme is really really tenacious
, that's why.
6/30/2009 3:16:10 PM
Lady Amairany Gray
Yeah, that's pretty much what we're saying.
6/30/2009 3:17:45 PM
To try and say that Genesis 1 is false is to say that God lied.
This only applies if you can demonstrate that God wrote Genesis 1.
Of course, the Bible does an admirable job showing that God is not perfect, so the rest of your progression still follows.
6/30/2009 4:44:58 PM
Little further...little further...
6/30/2009 5:15:21 PM
Although the logic is severely flawed he still manages to come to the correct conclusion. There's hope yet.
6/30/2009 6:07:11 PM
Oooh! That first step to critical thinking. Now keep thinking that over, and see if you reach the right conclusion.
Maybe you'll at least conclude that the bible was in fact, written by people, people who had an agenda to push, so they would write whatever they wanted and had people believe it.
6/30/2009 7:26:01 PM
exactly. that's why we say it.
what part of this don't you understand?
6/30/2009 8:20:23 PM
To try and say that Genesis 1 is false...
...is to read Genesis 2 after having read Genesis 1. If you've got a functional brain. You see, they cannot possibly both be true.
6/30/2009 8:40:16 PM
Yep, you're absolutely 100% correct. That is exactly what we're saying, and that's mostly the method by which we got there.
7/1/2009 5:20:23 AM
7/1/2009 6:57:21 AM
To try and say that Genesis 1 is false is to say that God lied. To say that God lied is to say say he is not perfect. To say God is not perfect is to say that he is not God. To say that God is not God is to say he doesn't exist. To say this, is to say that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all just made up out of no where.
Try it. I assure you, it won't hurt.
