-Because Spanish is a very rich language, and hispanic culture and tradition is very interesting and beautiful.
-Because like it or not we are becoming a bilingual nation and if you look at any want ads page, you'll see that more and more customer service jobs are calling for bilingual reps.
-Because learning another language stimulates the brain, enhances understanding of your own language and broadens your knowledge of the world around you.
-Because students in almost every other developed country begin learning a second language usually by their third or fourth year of school, so that's yet another area that the US educational system has been lagging behind in.
Does that answer your question?

And, last but not least, so they are able to communicate with people from, uhmm, I don't know...Mexico? Spain? Other spanish-speaking South American countries that I will not name because I just would mess it up and write down one or two that actually speak Portuguese?
Well, you get the idea...I hope.

Okay, for the record: People in Brazil speak Portuguese, I tell you.

Um, how the hell did this make it to RSTDT? This isn't funny, it's just plain stupid, and personally I don't see any racism here anyway. Has the quality of quotes here been decreasing?

What's worse are these so called bi-lingual classes. The little spicks never make an attempt to learn english. Hello, your here, learn the language of THIS country.

Oh come on TRAC, you're not even trying anymore. I could go to any Nascar event and get some drunk to yell learn goddamn english, whereas your backwater hate speech has always had a special, and I do mean special, flair of bigotry, stupidity, and just the slightest bit of envy.

Hey, TRAC...a little grammar lesson for you:
"Your" = Ownership
"You're" = Contraction of "you" and "are"
Jesus, can't you do anything right?

They also offer other languages like French and in some schools German. Why aren't you making hissy fit over that? I mean after all, English is the only language that should be taught right?

>>"[On kids in summer school]
Why the **** are they learning Spanish?"
Probably because the kids have to have a foreign language as a requirement to graduate, and the kids taking Spanish in summer school didn't pass it during regular school and have to make it up.
At least, that's how it worked when I was in school...:-|

No one asks "Why the **** are they learning spelling?"
Because nobody seems to be teaching spelling anymore. That's the feeling I've got from being on the net.
As for the OP, it gets a meh from me.

Strangely, I agree, but for vastly different reasons. Judging by what I've seen in my time here, they should be learning English first (and spelling and grammar), and when they've mastered that, -then- they should move on to foreign languages.
Incidentally, nobody should need to be bilingual -- when you move to another country, you LEARN THE GODDAMN LOCAL LANGUAGE instead of expecting everyone to cater to your lazy ass and waste money on translation services.

See, this is why I want to set myself up as a high-school Arabic teacher some day. Not only because high school age is a better time to learn languages, but because I can get assorted racist, paranoid conservative riffraff to piss their pants.
(and to WMDKitty, nobody NEEDS to be bilingual, but maybe people will someday go someplace where "the local language" is not English, and the same rules should apply, no? I mean, if people are expected to learn one of the hardest languages in the world quickly even after coming here from situations that weren't exactly ideal for education, shouldn't American tourists, who are a highly privileged group of people in the first place, be expected to be able to speak French in France or Spanish in Spain and Latin America?)
