Quote# 64093

[Can gays be Christians? Apparently not...]

My test is [to] substitute another sexual sin and see if it makes sense. Would we be talking about a survey of porn-using Christians or incestuous Christians? That sounds stark, but that's, I believe, the appropriate biblical analogy. I think there are Christians who struggle with the sin of homosexuality -- but proud homosexual Christians? That's an oxymoron to me in the same way as I would say proud adulterous Christians. And so, I think we have to be very careful because I see the tactic of the Emergent Church and the Christian left is to start talking more and more about 'gay Christians,' and what they end up doing is demonizing the so-called 'Religious Right' and saying that the Religious Right is all wrong in the way it has talked about homosexuality.

So... what about all those conservative politicians who cheated on their wives then still claim that they are good christians? Why do you keep voting for them?

whoops, double post.

Incestuous? Let me introduce you to the bible belt, and Lot, also Just about EVERYONE if Genesis is literal. :|

The FBI is controlling your thoughts via your toaster.

Can you tell me, Peter LaBarbera, why are you fundies so obsessed about gay sex?

Struggling with a few gay thoughts Peter?

Btw your name is Peter. <snark>

Would we be talking about a survey of porn-using Christians or incestuous Christians?

And what attempts have you made to bar rawpalms and cousinhumpers from marriage? From adoption? Have you tried to make it legal to fire someone for watching porn or kissing their sister? No? You havent done one fucking thing against those other 'sinners' while using the bible to justify your bigotry against gays?

7/19/2009 1:56:43 PM

Humanity was conceived by incest, it's all over your bible, and it's never condemned.

Read your own book.

Jedi Knight

You need to learn that being gay isn't only about sex, it's about love. Your analogy doesn't work.

7/19/2009 2:24:55 PM

Why do I sometimes feel like the religious right is just one big fucking closet case?

7/19/2009 2:29:44 PM

I take much comfort in knowing history is going to judge you and your ilk very harshly. You're going to be viewed about as positively as anti-suffragists and racial segregationists.

7/19/2009 2:30:27 PM

Incestuous? Let me introduce you to the bible belt, and Lot, also Just about EVERYONE if Genesis is literal.

Have you ever been to the Bible belt? I was born there. Everyone there is not an inbred mouth-breathing fundie. There are plenty of atheists and liberal Christians and people of other faiths. Why, they even have JEWS. Furthermore, I live in the northeast now and I can ASSURE you that there are fundies and rednecks here. George W. Bush is actually from Connecticut. Bashing everyone who doesn't live on one of the coasts is just as fundie as the idiots who think all the liberals are babyraping pedophiles.

7/19/2009 2:30:32 PM

But wait. What does one's sexual orientation have to do with the religion they choose to follow? I mean, if being gay isn't something a person can help, then I see no reason to punish them for it by barring them from spirituality. You could be a "gay Christian", or a "black Christian", or a "blond-haired Christian", or whatever.

And, the Religious Right kind of brings a lot of the hatred and demonization onto itself when it shoots its collective mouth off and says something rude. Haven't you ever heard the phrase "Squeaky wheel gets the oil"?

@ EvoPagan: "Everyone there is not an inbred mouth-breathing fundie. There are plenty of atheists and liberal Christians and people of other faiths."

This is certainly true, but I definitely got the impression, when I lived in Texas, that you keep quiet about that kind of stuff if you're one of those people. I also lived in the Northeast growing up as a child, and there was certainly a fair amount of bigotry there. It just seems like that part of the country isn't as obvious about it, or something.

That's an oxymoron to me in the same way as I would say proud adulterous Christians

In contrast to adultery, where usually the spouse of the cheating person gets emotionally hurt (if s/he discoveres the extramarital liaison) there is noone getting hurt in a homosexual relationship (if it is between consenting adults).
On the contrary...
it rather hurts them that they cannot marry each other and therefore are denied basic rights, for example having the same rights as the relatives of the person they love, concerning visits in the hospital, if said person is extremly ill.

I wonder btw. that you, not once, mention marriages between (so called) christians and atheists (or believer in another religion)...
there are more passages about god condemning unbelievers (and far worse punishments for them) than about homosexuals (look at deuteronomy 13 for example... a whle chapter dedicated to the ways you should treat unbelievers).
Considering gods stance on unbelievers one should assume that you should protests the rights of un believers in todays society (and interfaith marriages) far more than the rights of homosexuals

Hello Fundamentalist Christians. There's someone I'd like you to meet. His name is Tom Hypothetical.

Tom Hypothetical was born and raised Christian. He reads his Bible thoroughly and obeys it fully. When he reached his teenage years, he found himself attracted not to girls his own age, but to boys. Tom Hypothetical didn't know what to do. So, he consulted his Bible. This is what the bible had to say:

"You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." (Leviticus 18:22)

Oh, thought Tom, I'm not allowed to have gay sex. Okay. So, he put down his Bible, and went back to his life.

When Tom was in his twenties, he met Phil. Phil was also a gay Christian. Tom and Phil decided not to have sex, because that was condemned by the Bible. However, Tom and Phil remained openly gay partners.

The moral of this story is that if you don't have gay sex, the Bible doesn't give a damn whether you're gay or straight. And there's more to sexuality than sex. Guys like Tom and Phil focus on the "uality" part (which I'm assuming means loving relationships) just fine. In fact, this relationship may even be more in line with Christian belief than heterosexuality!

"But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:28)

Gays don't do that! They win. Sorry, try again. My apologies to fellow FSTDTers who had to scroll through all that.

David B.

Why stop with "sexual sins"? Why not substitute all the other sins and see if that works?

Can one be a hateful, angry Christian?
Can one be a lazy Christian?
Can one be a lying, cheating Christian?
Can one be a money-grabbing Christian?
Can one be a greedy, overweight Christian?
Can one be a spiteful, envious Christian?
Can one be a smug, proud, self-satisfied Christian?

Well, yes, if most of the Christian fora on the internet are anything to go by. In fact most of the people who end up here are not only several of the above, but think anyone who isn't is not a "true Christian"(tm).

So why is love, or even simply lust, an insurmountable bar to Christianity? Oh, wait, that one's pretty well represented among the "true Christians"(tm) too.

7/19/2009 3:21:42 PM

"...the Religious Right is all wrong..."

The religious right (no capitalisation warranted) is *always* wrong, about *EVERYTHING*. Fact.

7/19/2009 4:09:54 PM

That's an oxymoron to me in the same way as I would say proud adulterous Christians.

proud adulterous Christians or as I like to call them, either a republican politician or a priest!

7/19/2009 4:22:46 PM

Yeah! No teenage Christian boy or girl would- o wait~! That's right, pretty much EVER FUCKING PERSON IN THE WORLD has masturbated at one point in their lives.

Seriously, it's like having a healthy sex drive is a sin in itself!

7/19/2009 4:25:51 PM

Adultery is a behavior.

Christianity is a lifestyle choice.

Homosexuality is a sexual orientation and, unlike the examples listed above, is not chosen.

7/19/2009 4:59:29 PM

So it's okay to be a homosexual Christian, just keep it in the closet along with your affairs and copies of Hustler?

I wish I could think of a stronger word than Hypocrite.

7/19/2009 5:35:29 PM

Pule Thamex

Not just homosexuality. The religious right is wrong every time it opens its mouth. For what issues forth is insanity and lies.

7/19/2009 6:10:35 PM

Old Viking

Demonize the religious right? Oh, heaven forfend!

7/19/2009 6:30:21 PM

Proud Christians? I thought pride was a sin. Oh well, guess anyone's free to pick and choose.

Oh and believe me, you definitely don't need the gays help to demonize your reich. You guys are experts at that.

7/19/2009 7:09:34 PM

The Lazy One

If you take the Bible literally, we're all here thanks to incest.

And if you're going to demonize everyone who's ever looked at porn, even in passing or accidentally, have fun being the only person in the world who's not evil.

7/19/2009 7:54:45 PM

you just figured this out?

7/19/2009 8:34:13 PM

Phew. I've never been so glad to not be a christian.
