People really are quite stupid. It (Facebook) is merely a tool / database for the government to collect as much information about people as possible. It allows them to see who you are linked to etc. Just another form of big brother. No I am not paranoid, just a realist. Wake up you morons, and live your life !

Because the government really gives a damn about the minutiae of your day. I mean seriously willie you're publishing info on a public site, if you have secrets you don't put them up unless you're a complete idiot (I know conspiracy theorist never listen to logic but sometimes ya just gotta yell it at em anyway).
Yeah, because the government really needs Facebook to get info on you and they really fucking care enough to actively spy on you through a convoluted and overly complex social networking site.
Look, idiot, while normally I agree with the whole "Wake up and give a shit" jargon, I think you need to go back to bed and not give a shit.
Why would the government give a fuck about what my dog did today, what kind of old person I'll be, or where I am in Mafia Wars.
Even most of my friends are people I don't know in RL.
of all the reasons not to use facebook, that one is the fucking dumbest ever. I'd be more worried about bosses looking at your FB page to supplement your CV/application, then about government surveillance.
The government didn't create Facebook and the creator didn't intend it as such a tool/database.
However, when people keep willingly putting up shit that clearly incriminates them, they shouldn't be surprised that authorities (not just government, but businesses hiring prospective employees, school administrators, and the like) would take an interest. You're the ones willfully putting information into a fairly public forum; it's fair game for anyone who wants it.
Personally, I think it's a good way for government to track things like hate groups, too. People who create Myspace or Facebook groups with radical leanings or heavily loading on the anti-gay/anti-Jew/anti-black/anti-Muslim/anti-anything-else speech just make it easier to watch them and keep them from doing serious damage. So if the government really IS watching Facebook, you'll find that it would be hard for me to give a damn.
"People really are quite stupid."
Generaly yes.
"It (Facebook) is merely a tool / database for the government to collect as much information about people as possible"
You realy think governments are that interested in which TV shows and webcasts the average teenager watches??
Facebook is a social networking service that Hypotheticaly could be used by government to collect frivolous and worthless data on who was wearing what designer running shoes in social studies class.
Thats about it.
To a certain degree, yes, you can monitor interests and links between people. However, for any serious research or surveillance Facebook would be totally unreliable. Think about all the junk that's there and how it would contaminate your data.
On the other hand, if you are paranoid, no amount of reasoning would convince you...
ETA: actually, on a more sinister note, it is not unheard of for the US government to enact stupid and oppressive fear-based policies. Moronic screening procedures at airports kind of demonstrate that :)
Either way, if you don't like Facebook -- don't use it, simple as that.
While yes people can be quite stupid, NO, Facebook isn't a tool/database for the government. Sorry William, you really aren't as smart and clever as you may think you are.
Besides, ever heard of the Social Security Number? If you have one, the government knows you exist. Ever had to file income taxes, get a drivers license, or get financial aid for college? If so, that's all the information that the government would need to contact you especially since your screen name is male, and if you are a U.S. resident, you would have had to sign up for the Selective Services when you are or were 18 years old. So screw Facebook, a PRIVATELY owned site for the world to use.
But calm down William, calm down. The government probably doesn't give a crap about you. Seriously, unless you are a millionare that owes the IRS in backtaxes which I can probably safely bet that you aren't.
Right on. Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, they're all government ran. The government wants to know everything you do and when you do it. Also, web cams are made by the gov so they can check up on you through the internet.
Yes, saying that other people are stupid obviously gives credence to your argument.
First, unless you mask personal information (as you can do,) it is a PUBLIC website. They do not need the PATRIOT Act to monitor it, and are not actually violating fourth or fifth amendment rights (like the PATRIOT Act does). It is perfectly constitutional and reasonable for them to search information you 'hide' if you have a warrant on you. (There are probably a few other legal searches I'm unfamiliar with.)
In the meantime, I'm sure that the government can and will use Facebook and Myspace against you if they can (i.e. using pictures of you when drunk in child custody battles).
There is, however, one group that constantly monitors your Facebook status: advertisers. They will observe as much of your info as they legally can (I suspect that , and then Facebook will direct specific advertisements towards you. Funny, though; advertisers are never seen as intrusive in the CT's world, or at least are severely overlooked.
Facebook is just one of the many ways the CIA can get information about you. Chances are, if you're doing anything that might attract government attention, it either won't be posted on facebook or they already know about it.
On the one paw, yeah, people are fucking stupid. We see this demonstrated on a daily basis.
On the other, well, it's fucking Facebook -- nobody forces people to sign up for it, so it's not "Big Brother" at all. I, personally, choose to opt out, as FB sucks.
Heck man I don't have a facebook either, not because I worry about the government checking it. I'm more worried about spammers, scammers and identity thieves. I mean a facebook profile contains almost everything you'd need to impersonate someone.
That and I think Facebook is kind of pointless. All its lol's are unoriginal and its dramas stolen from elsewhere.
Look, if you bathe more and spoke less, you might acquire friends, William. Use your brain cells, son. That's what they are there for.
If they really wanted info on me they'd already have it. and i wouldn't care anyway. they could turn the whole world into some orwellian thing and i wouldn't care. i have no reason to care, as the government is not trying to turn the world into some orwellian thing, and any info about me they would ever need they can just look up my personal records or birth certificate/etc.
I'm on Facebook, but to keep marketers, not the guvvimmint, out of my hair, I keep my Privacy settings high- friends or friends of friends can see my stuff. It's highly unlikely the feds give a shit about my favorite music, movies, or books, or that I'm in several ham radio related groups. The FCC knows my call sign already, that's public information.
If the government was watching my facebook, I'd be arrested by now :P just kidding, but its complete bullcrap, the government isn't watching, stalkers are!
Oh good, then the government can tell me who my Facebook friends are because I wouldn't know 90% of them if I tripped over them. There might be the odd suicide bomber or axe murderer in there for all I know, because I never say no to a Friend request.
Confused?
