Quote# 64185

I heard something yesterday which left me breathless. Maybe all of you already know it, but here goes.

When George Washington was inaugurated, he and the entire Congress dedicated this country to God. And the place where they did this? On a street which is now part of the well-known "Ground Zero" in New York City.

God allowed for us to get a wake-up call on 9-11, but I had no idea what a stunning call it was.

Pray for our country.

Your conclusion is based on a faulty premise. But even if it were true that every founding father was a raging Christian, we as a people are still free to practice whatever religion we want (or none at all).

Stop deifying the founding fathers. They were still racist, sexist bastards who were ok with slavery.

Wtf? Yeah, it was wake up call for America. It had shown that you are not invulnerable and perfect. And that your acting of (hypocritical) world cop hadn't gone unnoticed. But some people do not learn that easy... It was a terrible tragedy, even more since it was used to destroy basic human rights. Now, stop pulling shit out of your fanny and go pray a little bit more.

3. If they were such raging Christians, why did they make it a point to specify that Congress isn't to establish a national religion? Seems to me that if they had been on your side, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

So your God kills 3,000 plus people by using Islamic terrorists, who thought it was their idea, in order to give the survivors a "wake up call?"

Your God is a dick! Fuck him!

Not surprisingly, I could not find any account of Washington "dedicating this country to God" let alone all of congress doing so, outside of fundie websites.

One of you is lying. Thus, either one of you is already in Hell, or will be going there after they die.

Ever hear of the Treaty of Tripoli? See you in Hell, bitch.

Lies. Washington was inaugurated at Federal Hall on Wall Street. Do you know what's there now? Federal Hall.

So much for the ninth commandment.

So Carla. Tell me how you resolve the following: You fundies think the Masons are satanic(you haven't a clue about those folks)) but George Washington was a Mason. Something like 35%(+ or -) of signers of the Constitution were Masons. Masons also signed the Declaration of Independence. If you could explain that I'd appreciate it.

Why are your god's messages to mankind always so violent (terrorist attacks, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis...)? Why can't he send a wake up call by having a giant Unicorn fly across the sky, trailing a banner that says: "this is a message from god: WAKE UP"?

"On a street which is now part of the well-known "Ground Zero" in New York City. "

So, its a street. In Manhattan, which is an important place. They put important things there, then as now.

If the World Trade Center and Washington's Inauguration were in a cow pasture in Iowa then... well, you still wouldn't have a point, but it would be more of one than you have now.

I really don't understand this reverence for, and worship of, the Founding Fathers. Yes they founded your country, great (although they were arguably traitors and the terrorists of their time, from another point of view).

But that doesn't give them the right to dictate what and how the US should be for eternity. Even if they HAD declared it a Christian country, for example - so what? You're not bound to their opinions now.

Wait, what?

I don't recall ever hearing this in history class, even after the aftermath of 9/11. Hell, I went to school in Texas if that tells you anything as well.

Seriously, like the previous posts state, if our founding fathers were such devout Christians to the fanatical range like you are, then why didn't they officially write in the constitution that Christianity is the offical religion of the United States of America?

"When George Washington was inaugurated, he and the entire Congress dedicated this country to God"

I heard something that will leave even more breathless.

At midnight on the same date, at the site of the future Liberty Baptist Bible College, he secretly dedicated this country to satan.

The constitution is the basis for American government, while most of the founding father's opinions aren't any more important than any other 200 year old leader their opinions on the constitution are. The opinion of the people who wrote it is probably the only really legitimate base to interpret the constitution.
Take this idiot we've quoted here, she probably thinks the constitution gurantees freedom OF religion but not Freedom FROM religion. While one could spend hours pointing out why this is fucking stupid for modern reasons, its so easy to just look up what the people who actually wrote the constitution thought of freedom of religion.

Washington didn't dedicate the country to God; he asked for God's benediction. Interestingly, he never actually used the words God or Lord, and certainly not Jesus - he always used some vague circumlocution: "that Almighty Being who rules over the universe", "the Great Author of every public and private good", "the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men" and "the benign Parent of the Human Race". The inauguration took place on Wall Street, diagonally across from the Stock Exchange. There's a memorial there now. It's not especially close to Ground Zero by NYC standards.
