DH & I were watching the news last night and the Gardasil commercial came on. I told DH, "If these girls would stop having sex before marriage, they wouldn't need a vaccine." I have to shake my head at the smug mothers saying that they had their daughters vaccinated to protect them. They just gave their daughters permission to be sexually promiscuous.

Here's an analogy for you - if you were building a nuclear reactor, and were confident that you had trained the operators never to make a mistake, would you not bother to build any failsafe systems or a containment building?
I have to shake my head at the smug mothers saying that my daughter would never have sex before marriage.
I also have to shake my head at the smug mother who's so stupid as to think a piece of paper from the state is going to protect her faithful daughter from ever getting an STD from her lyin', cheatin' husband.
Yes, I agree the mothers in those commercials are smug, but when you call it out like that, it's the pot calling the kettle black. If I had a daughter, I'd give her unbiased information about HPV, cervical cancer, and the vaccine and let her decide for herself.
ETA: Do they need to start putting fine-print disclaimers on marriage certificates like they do on commercials for birth control and erectile dysfunction meds? "Marriage does not protect against HIV, HPV, or other sexually transmitted diseases."
Mommies on RR passed smug a long time ago. Pot and kettle.
does DH mean dear husband ? How fundie.
edit: oops...shykid beat me to it.
When you wish to keep your daughter vulnerable to a fatal disease just to keep them from having sex, that makes you a horrible, callous, cruel person. Oh, and there are other ways of contracting HPV, just for the record.
Bitch.
Ok, let's say that she does chose to wait until marriage, what if her husband hasn't? Or what if both of them have decided to wait, but he fools around on the side? Shouldn't she be entitled to some measure of protection?
Getting married does not protect you from getting cervical cancer, dumbass! For best result you should be vaccinated before having sex for the first time. I don't think it's the amount of partners that gives you that cancer, but it might be their cleanliness. Having one partner (the husband) who never cleans under his foreskin might be enough.
Plus, Gardasil does not protect you against unwanted pregnancies and STDs, so you still need to protect yourself in other ways as well.
The only thing the mothers did, was to lower the risk of their child getting cervical cancer in 50 years or so.
"They just gave their daughters permission to be sexually promiscuous. "
Who said anything about being promiscuous? Or marriage? HPV is spread by sex. Any (vaginal) sex. And if "DH" has had sex before marriage (or is divorced), a virgin bride could still get the virus.
Stop acting like your prudish and unrealistic hangups about sex somehow make you better than everyone else. And not everyone who has sex before marriage is a 'slut'. Oh, and I notice you only focus of girls having pre-marital sex.
So does this mean that you won't let your daughter have a typhus vaccine because you're afraid she'll drink the sewer water in Calcutta?
For those who asked, DH stands for Dear Husband.
Have you ever noticed that all airplanes have oxygen masks, emergency exits, and seat-cushion flotation devices, even though most of them will never need them?
Apparently, they've given pilots permission to crash their airliners.
shykid FTW about the marriage fine print. That would be awesome.
DH, DBF, all are used in other non-religious sites I've posted on, it's not a fundie thing.
Oh, and I wish they'd gotten that damn vaccine out sooner - a vaccine that protects against cancer and several other nasty infections, sign me up! (Too old... boo.)
DH & I...
David Hasselhoff?
DH & I...
David Hasselhoff?
And letting them wear their seatbelts in the car gives them permission to be reckless drivers.
EDIT: OK, that was the very first comment above. I suck.
"If these girls would stop having sex before marriage, they wouldn't need a vaccine."
This is a "pearl of wisdom" on par with something Gloria of Thurn and Taxis (a german countess who is a little bit of a catholic fundamentalist) said a couple of years ago about AIDS in Africa:
"They wouldn´t have these huge problems with AIDS in Africa, if the people there just stopped having so much sex"
Uh yeah, like you have cause to tar anyone else as 'smug.'
What makes you think your daughter's future husband won't have the virus? After all, you seem to be concerned only with panty-sniffing and slut shaming for girls.
Fucking idiot.
If these girls would stop having sex before marriage, they wouldn't need a vaccine.
Because no married woman ever caught any STDs from a cheating husband, ever.
If these girls would stop having sex before marriage, they wouldn't need a vaccine. So I say "no vaccine". That way, if they have sex anyway and get HPV, good for them, because everyone knows sex is disgusting and dirty and should be punished with a prolonged death from cervical cancer. In fact, the heck with HPV - that just causes cancer. I told my daughter if I find out she's having sex, I'm going to inoculate her with Ebola virus so she can die an even more horrible death. That'll stop her. [/sarcasm]
Yeah, no sex for women before marriage, but no mention of men not having sex before marriage--kind if defeats the purpose of abstinence before marriage to prevent STDs when only on partner is required to practice it.
We know, we know, you hate everything and everyone including yourself. Just declare yourself a misanthropist and get it over with. And don't ever leave your house again unless you need to buy groceries, etc.
ETA: For those younger than 26 who's interested, they do apparently offer a catch-up vaccine. I might get it myself if I can.
Because rape never happens, and no good abstinent girl EVER marries a man who lied about saving himself for his wedding night.
If I were insured, I'd get it too. There are some sick people in the world, and you don't know what they might force on you.
"If these girls would stop having sex before marriage, they wouldn't need a vaccine."
Marriage doesn't protect you from STD's. Esp ones that take years to show up in tests.
No, they accept the fact that their daughters will, at some point, become sexually active, and want to PROTECT them from HPV, and some forms of cervical cancer.
(How does that translate into "giving them permission to be promiscuous"?)
Man: Hey, wanna have sex?
Woman: No, I don't want to contract HPV, which is a leading cause of cervical cancer.
Because this happens so often.
Right, because abstinence and a wedding band totally protects you from contracting cervical cancer, STDs or unwanted pregnancy. The vaccine is protect against common strains of HPV that can cause cancer, and can be caught through ANY unprotected sex, within married or not.
(Another thing, if this vaccine were about inoculating boys against testicular cancer, I'll bet money there wouldn't be a squeak of protest about "promiscuity" from the wingnuts?)
No, they gave their daughters a useful protection against a disease that could lead to the development of a dangerous cancer. the main difference: they're not completely fucked in the head like you.
Maybe they're paying attention to reality, and know that their children are going to have sex someday and they should try to have them be as safe as possible instead of trying to lord over them and end up just failing miserably.
I guess when my folks had me vaccinated against infectious diseases, they were giving me permission to never wash my hands?
Hard to believe that in the 21st century we have people who think that sexual promiscuity is worse than vaccinations.
I told DH, "If these girls would stop having sex before marriage, they wouldn't need a vaccine."
How do you know that their husband-to-be isn't infected with HPV? What's to stop their husband from having an affain and contracting and passing only to the disease to her? Too bad there isn't any way to prevents those things... Oh, wait... Yeah there is, there is this vaccine.
I have to shake my head at the smug mothers saying that they had their daughters vaccinated to protect them.
What in the fuck is "smug" about a mother wanting to protect het daughter from a virus that can cause A life threatening for of cancer? Being "smug" is think that you have the only viable answer and that there are no possible variables, being "smug" is advocating putting lives at risk for the sake of religious or ideological purity.
They just gave their daughters permission to be sexually promiscuous.
As if that was the only thing stoppong them? Were people not promiscuious before such a vaccine? And what could possibly lead you to think that just because a girl get the HPV vaccine that her first thought is going to be "Ooh, I want to go have unprotected sex with a stranger, any stranger. "? It's a ridiculous line of thinking. People don't go around thinking that just because they have the HPV vaccine that they can go around screwing whomever they wish. Only sexually repressed religious types have those kinds of thoughts and opinions about others.
"They just gave their daughters permission to be sexually promiscuous."
Daughters don't need permission to be promiscuous. It's a myth that women don't want sex. Also you're deluding yourself if you think your daughter will not simply just hide her boyfriend (or girlfriend!)from you.
You can get HPV even if you do wait for marriage. My sister got cervical cancer and she's only been with her husband.
I hate the whole "Gardasil makes you a slut" argument. I got it and I'm still a virgin.
"I hope you don't have children so you won't fill their heads with garbage like this and your bullshit religion. "
Yes she does have children. Diane 1611 is my mom. There's me (Rachel), a 25 year old goth, pagan lesbian and there's my 13 year old brother Phillip. Yes, she does push her religion on us but seeing as how I'm both pagan and a lesbian, obviously it didn't do much good. My brother is also rebeling against her bible bullshit too.
And please don't stop with comments. They make me laugh. I know my mother is an idiot and the fact that other people see this too makes me smile.
Confused?
