[Excerpt from a work of fiction "presented to stimulate thought and assist Christian families in homeschooling their children"]
One day while Father was away at work, a knock came at the door of the family's home. Mother opened the door and found a stern man with sharp teeth and a very pointy nose standing on the doorstep.
"May I help you?" Mother asked.
"I am here," snarled the man, "to inspect your home and your children."
Mother was surprised. "Whatever for?" she asked.
"It has been reported," snapped Mr. Pointy Nose, "that you do not institutionalize your children, as is the norm. It has been reported that you spend an abnormal amount of time with your children, and you have been seen laughing with them, and they with you. It has been reported that your teen child is not embarrassed to be seen with you and that she smiles while working in your garden and hanging laundry. I will have to inspect your house and ask you some questions."
Mother invited Mr. Pointy Nose in and offered him a cup of tea. Mr. Pointy Nose pulled a great pile of papers from his briefcase and began asking important questions: "How many television sets do you own, how often do you dine out, why do you have so many books, what do you have against institutions, why do you grow your own food, do your children know who Madonna is, how about Beavis and Butthead?"

LOL what?
Seriously, do they really think anyone's going to come by their houses and say "HOW DARE YOU HOMESCHOOL YOUR CHILD?!"
The only problem with home-schooling is when you use the isolation of your child as an excuse to force some warped worldview on him/her. Oh wait, this is a Christian homeschool collective--of course they're doing that!
If this is what they truly believe, they should not be allowed to homeschool their children.
Oh, and Mr Pointy nose? Like this guy?

How to keep your cult in line: Rule #6
Keep them convinced they are being hunted by sinister, unseen forces who will persecute them for their beliefs.
I was not afraid to be seen with my mother, I liked our garden and hanging clothes is not terrible, terrible slavework. And I went to school. I hadn't the best of times, but those things had nothing to do with it. What the fuck, people?
@Doctor Fishcake
Glad to see I'm not the only one who immediately thought this upon reading "Mother opened the door and found a stern man with sharp teeth and a very pointy nose standing on the doorstep."
How fucking stupid can these people be?
The rest of it seems to be poorly written drivel unworthy of comment.
Paranoid, much?
My problem with homeschooling is when the parents fill their kids' heads with shit and call it an "education".
Plenty of people have self-taught their kids to higher standards than the public system. They weren't fundies, mind...
I used to work with a woman who was homeschooled. I used the term "woman" loosely because at 28 she had the maturity of a 12 year old. Could not function independently whatsoever, no fucking clue how to get along with people, couldn't cope with the ups and downs of life in the workplace. If the boss criticized her she cried and threatened to walk out. (which she eventually did, to no one's disappointment) She's now in her first ever relationship with a very controlling man, and sees nothing wrong with it and is morbidly obese because she has no concept of nutrition, and has no friends because she doesn't know how to make them and because she expects everyone she meets to wait on her hand and foot the way her mother did.
Yeah, great thing, homeschooling. But hey, she wasn't embarrassed to be seen with her parents. Only because she never knew another person until her early 20's.
Oh and academically, she was, to put it kindly, dumber than a box of rocks. Knew nothing about all those subjects homeschooled kids supposedly excel in.
Huh? What? My mother would never invite anyone whom she did not trust, regardless if dad was home or not. I love my mom, always have, always will. I was not "popular" during the high school years, so mum was my firm point, and she still is, 25 years later.
That is one mighty strawman you have there, sir. I see you are about to make some of the worst literature mankind has seen.
And let's not forget those unfortunate implications you are making...
Poe. Please, poe. This is such of a self parody (for a start, "sharp teeth and a very pointy nose", implied anti-semitism aside, sounds like a description of a Lemony Snicket character) that it's either a poe or... a really sad fundie delusion just like the rest of this site. Sigh.
And for the record: As a teenager, I wasn't embarrassed to be seen with my parents, and I went to *public* school.
In my experience, the home schooled kids have the least amount of books in their home, too many bad influences in literature.
There is more to say, but that's my favorite part.
If someone has been or is being home schooled by a fundie you can usually tell by how UNschooled they really are (spelling, grammar, factual history, science, etc., etc.. I really fear for the future of our country, with the ignorant "teaching" more ignorance to a whole new generation.
We might have been colonizing Mars by now, or have found a cure for most horrible diseases if it were not for these wretched, ignoramuses and the "education" of their children.
It makes me very sad to see the decline in general knowledge that abounds these days; in the 21st century, with horse and buggy ideas.
Anyone familiar with "2001 a Space Odyssey" knows how capable we could have been, by now("HAL" notwithstanding).
This isn't an indictment on home schooling in general. I know some very intelligent and capable people that are home schooling their children and doing a great job of it.
See, it's not the positive aspects that make people suspicious of homeschoolers. It's the negative ones -- which typically result from kids homeschooled by people who think they're being persecuted the way this describes -- the kids who have no social skills whatsoever, who can do no wrong, who do not learn what they -need- to know. But I'm sure you think your angels get along fine with everyone and they'll learn what they need when they realize they need it. In the meantime your angel is ignoring the teacher of an optional program you sent him to, throwing things at her, and you fuss and fume. . . at the teacher. . . when you find out.
I like how they point out the 'inspector's' features first thing to make him seem untrustworthy. That's right, teach your children to fear people because of how they look! Judge books by their cover! Way to raise your kids!
On top of that, how ludicrous is this?? Someone sees a teenager acting decent instead of like most of their obnoxious peers, and they call someone to look up on them? Are you serious? On top of that, what sort of organization would dedicate themselves to making sure that teenagers don't read and are enrapt in pop culture of the nineties?? And I ought to point out that none of these things have anything to do with homeschooling!
Inciting paranoia for the sake of making people insular for the lose!
None of the questions listed have anything to do with homeschooling as far as I can see. And learn how to punctuate!
Tammy, don't quit your day job.

Well, if you do it in your own garden you're most likely contravening Leviticus 19:19: 'Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
"... do your children know who Madonna is, how about Beavis and Butthead?"
AFAIK, no state requires home-schooled children to be educated in ancient history.
As a secular home-schooler I'd like to ask that people remember there IS a distinction between religious and secular home-schooling.
I totally agree that the paranoia in this extract is very scary stuff.
Tammy, when you homeschool your children, please do teach them what they will need to know as adults, like always asking whether the customers would like paper or plastic.
My christian mother has three tv's, no garderen, and put me and my siblings in school every year, I do like to help her around the house, and I'm not embarassed to be seen at the mall with her.
I guess she's not a "true christian" is she?
And I don't think the "Mr. Pointy Nose" is Jewish. I think he might represent Satan.
No one is trying to force you to integrate, but if you don't want to integrate, then you forfeit the right to make choices for those of us who DO choose to integrate.
Also, every one of those questions in that massive run-on should have a question mark instead of a comma.
This reads like a bad fanfic.I couldn't finish reading it.Hell,I went to public school and I couldn't tell you who Beavis and Butthead were.As for not liking reading,so it took me a few years to love it.What of it?
And I wasn't emberressed by my mom, more my dad.As for the growing your own garden?Fucking A,I lived on a ranch with our own garden, came in handy when you wanted veggies to go with that steer you had just butchered. Not withstanding,I still hated weeding it.
@Thejebusfire-I figured as much, but the Unfourtanate Implications are still there.Though I do like the Penguin answer.
One Saturday morning while I was sleeping late someone rang the doorbell of my home, and kept ringing it until I got up in a rage and went to it wearing only boxer shorts.
I opened the door to find a not-very-bright looking, morbidly obese man with yellow teeth and sweat-covered forehead standing outside.
"What the fuck?" I said.
"I am here," snarled the man "to see if you have found Jesus."
I was surprised. "Why, I didn't know he was missing," I answered.
The man scowled briefly before restoring a yellowed smile to his face.
"It has been written," snapped Mr. Pork Belly, "that you do not attend any of the nearby houses of worship, as is the norm. It has been reported that you spend an abnormal amount of time with your dogs, and you have been seen playing games with them, and they with you. It has been reported that you are not embarassed when you see your neighbors returning home from church on Sunday mornings even though you did not attend. I must tell you about my savior Jesus."
I helpfully advised Mr. Pork Belly on several inventive ways in which he could go fuck himself.
So is Mr. Pointy Nose a Jew or an Arab? I'm not sure who you're trying to condition your children to hate.
ADD: Oh, if only they had so many books and read them.
Not to support the Christian fundy douchebags, but, actually, if you've ever had an experience with CPS, they ARE like this.
Darn! Antichrist got it first. The other two pictures I see of the Mr. Pointy Nose with sharp teeth would be Satan (which I hope is what the writer is trying to allude to), or a Land Shark (a recurring SNL skit).
Although I am pretty sure the CPS doesn't care if the children know anything about 1990's pop culture, I have seen cases where once they are called on a person, they are hard to get rid of by the person.
This is really badly written. In the story she claims she and her offspring love Dickens, and I'm really glad she's allegedly encouraged her children to read Dickens and listen to Beethoven, but she hasn't learned any of Dickens' writing skill at all.
@Antichrist: good point about Pointy Nose. Eeeeeeew.
~Sarah, who read Dickens whilst she went to school.
Folks, after reading that horrid excuse for fiction writing, I recommend that everyone go over to sites like Literotica, ASSTR, or StoriesOnline. Now there, you'll find some quality writing...
I spent a lot of time with my parents on the weekends and I was never embarrassed to be seen with them. I enjoyed helping pick vegetables from our little vegetable garden out back.
And I was in regular school. And most people I know (including the government child protection agency, mostly likely) would consider those things signs of a healthy relationship and not things to be discouraged.
Your paranoia is highly entertaining. And stupid.
@Mudak: Compared to this drivel, FanFiction.Net has good writing.
And I avoid my fandoms on FFN because one's being spammed and one doesn't have any fic for the pairing I actually like because they give the male half Mary Sues instead.
{"Why do you have so many books..."
More like; "Why is there only the one old book in here? Where is your dictionary? Do these kids know who Karl Rove is? Do they understand what Jimmy Swaggart did?...
Oh, what's the use?
Just wait until I get elected King!
Heh
Heh hehheheheheh heh
"Mr. Pointy Nose"
Either Tammy has been reading too many of the "Kaiji" & "Akagi" manga (& the anime based on such) by Nobuyuki Fukumoto:
image
...or she's trying to denigrate secularists a la the Nazis did to Jews. (Kudos to atrasicarius for pointing this out)
Either way you FAIL, Tammy.
Long-nosed man? Sharp teeth? Slightly snarly and intimidating?
Just out of curiousity, does the man have a blonde-haired assistant called either Elizabeth or Margaret? Who carries an oversized book around?
(Anyone who's played Persona 3 or 4 will get this...)
@The L: yes, in germany in fact
and that's not the only place...
but not in america, where i think Tammy is from :D
1. "institutionalize" implies locking the victim up in a padded room for minimal psychiatric care. Sending your child out into the world to socialize with other children and be taught by a qualified teacher does no really fit with that implication.
2. "wretched" and "aversion" are not particularly difficult words. a thirteen year old who can use them correctly is nothing extraordinary. I'm pretty sure I knew them when I was eight, and I (oddly enough) didn't get almost-seized by child services for it.
3. your "mother" character is too cutesey and preachy for words. Why did you write this if all you were going to do was set up a strawman and then preach at it until it died of boredom?
4. Given the quality of your writing (or lack thereof) I find the phrase "She has tutored children and adults in English, writing..." rather disturbing. You should not be teaching writing to anyone.
Do your children know what calculus is? Or how to do science?
No. Then your not teaching...
And no one complains about people having "so many books". I bet I have more books than you...
I just want to say that the students I teach, who are not sheltered in the least, don't actually care who Madonna is and could only vaguely say. And have little recollection of Beavis and Butthead since it's been off the air for years. Seriously, try a current reference there.
"Sharp teeth"? WTF? Is he a human or some kind of a Hollywood monster? Who is able to estimate how sharp the teeth of people they talk to are?
Why didn't they just write he had an evil aura of darkness around him and cackled like a maniac?
Freethink: "We might have been colonizing Mars by now, or have found a cure for most horrible diseases if it were not for these wretched, ignoramuses and the "education" of their children. "
Cuty-pie, I know Americans suffer from a US-centric -eh, make that a US-exclusive- worldview, but I feel obliged to inform you *other* countries are in existence and interestingly enough, do not feel the consequences of backwards religious sects in the US Midlands.
Otherwise, I find myself agreeing with you.
All Christians are convinced that if any other group ever takes the kind of power they've held for nearly 2000 years, they will all be as brutal and oppressive as Christian authority was. Seriously, enforced viewing of Beavis and Butthead? Jesus Christ...

Oh wow. I guess I wasn't the only one who was thinking that. And the answer is Igor.
One Saturday morning, while I was sleeping in, a knock came at the door of my home. I opened the door and found a stern man with sharp teeth and a very pointy nose standing on the doorstep. He was trying to sell me on The Watchtower.
Good thing I answered the door naked -- haha, you should have seen him run!
As a homeschooler myself, I implore you to please keep in mind that the majority of us are rational, levelheaded people with a genuine interest in knowledge and learning, not delusional paranoids like this writer. With any group, you will get your extreme individuals, and making decisions based on faulty perceptions is bad for any group. You can bring up examples of extremely foolish people who were homeschooled, and I can point to examples of illiterate individuals graduating highschool (besides the fact anecdotal evidence is terrible, for or against any conclusion).
All I'm saying is, not everyone who homeschools does so because they feel like they are being persecuted because they can't act "holier than thou" in a public school without being knocked of their high horse. Some people, like myself, do so because of legitimate concerns with the public school system, or because they have a style of learning that does not work well in a classroom setting, as just a few examples.
Confused?
