Quote# 64921

Our church practices courtship and this is how we do it:

Prior to 18 the girls and boys are NEVER alone together. They do everything in group activities... group means 7 or more.. not an even number for pairing off and there must be an adult present as chaperone.

At 18, if two people are interested in each other, they stand before the congregation and announce their intention to court. The whole body is responsible for keeping them accountable. They can now go out alone but the girls parents must okay each session. No later than 6 months later, they must either begin a 6 months counseling session for premarriage or they must separate (no harm, no foul). After the 6 months if they so desire, they may marry at any time provided the pastor who does all the counseling and the two sets of parents agree and give their blessing.

Our girls and boys have a 99% rate for total purity at marriage... meaning their first kiss was at the alter. We have a next to 0 divorce rate and the kids totally buy into this, they are not being forced.

at 18 we're sending boys off to war, and expect them to be adults. These throwbacks have two ADULTS treated like children and possessions: what universe do they live in?

We have a next to 0 divorce rate

That sounds like a bloody lie to me. Actually, so does the 'purity' thing. I bet the whorehouse in that town does a roaring trade. And why are fundies so against the whole idea of fun? Miserable, repressed, tight-arsed bastards.

Edit: That was me, Nathan the Wise, currently half asleep.

"...and the kids totally buy into this, they are not being forced."

Anytime I read or hear something like that, I automatically assume I'm being lied to.

So, your cult keeps them from really getting to know each other, and that first awkward, wedding-night sexual encounter is what keeps them from ever having a good, meaningful sexual relationship.

Seriously, having to go in front of the whole congregation and announce your plans to date? And then being forced to break up if not engaged in 6 months? And then not even kissing each other until the moment they're married?

I find the 0% divorce rate unbelievable, unless they've brainwashed the women into being totally obedient & submissive to their husbands.

"They do everything in group activities... group means 7 or more.. "

I agree! When having sex, groups in odd numbers are far more fun!

Groups of seven, huh? There's a word I'm thinking of... starts with 'or' and ends with 'gy'...?

A next to 0 divorce rate? I wish you were a bit more specific.. because 49% and less is next to 0%.

Where the hell is that jaw dropping smiley they are so found of on RR... I could use it right now.

6 Months? After 6 months of dating, I barely know the guy's childhood, much less find out that he's an abusive bastard. (Happened to me after a year of dating when we were engaged... I've got permanent health problems and am lucky to be alive.)

Double post. Edit: For some reason, I hate subtle means of control like these more than the hard tough guardian-with-a-stick type. You can't really fight against subtle brainwashing.

"and the kids totally buy into this, they are not being forced."

That's because they don't have a clue it could be any different. Total control and repression can do that.

This is just outright disturbing.

"next to 0 divorce rate"

Next to? In what I expect is a relativly new program at the church. How are the divorce rate for the longer married members? (being that its highest amonst fundamentalist Christians even though they're against it)

How can anyone think this is a healthy normal way to find a mate?

So do they actually show the bloody sheets like they did in ancient times (and still do in some cultures), or are you just taking their word for it? I lied to my parents about still being a virgin, and even though they suspected (rightfully) otherwise, they just lived in denial about the whole thing. Kind of like you.

As for buying into it, yeah right. Kids are going to say anything to get their parents off their backs.

Almost every girl I know who got knocked up in high school came from a religious family. And most of those from the stricter ones.

Of course you have such a high "success" rate, it is a cult.
