/I voted for the Florida equivalent of Prop 8, and I'm all for living peaceably with gay people./
Bull. You're all for living peaceably with them as long as you don't know that they exist. As long as they keep their sexuality a secret, as long as they pretend to be something they're not. As long as you don't have to put up with the fact that your neighbors are different from you. Guess what, Adam, this was the same attitude from racists and misogynists in the past. "Oh, I'm for living peaceably with women as long as they know their place, stay at home, become breeding machines, and keep quiet." "Oh, I'm all for living peaceably with blacks as long as they're legally separated from me by Jim Crow laws. As long as they can't drink from the same water fountain that I drink from, can't go to the same restaurant that I go to, and can't go to the same school that my child attends."
/In fact, from what I've seen of the protests and everything, it is largely the gays who don't want to live peaceably with Christians, Mormons, or anyone else who refuses to openly accept and celebrate homosexuality./
I don't know what ethnicity you are, Adam, but just for the sake of example, I'll suppose that you're Irish. Now imagine that you can't get married to the woman you love because she's also Irish. Imagine that you can be fired from work once your boss hears you talk about going to the St. Patrick's Day Parade with her. Imagine that you can't adopt because your state government claims that if a child is raised by you, she or he will grow up to be a low-life alcoholic. Imagine that you can't mention anything that has to do with your Irish heritage because otherwise you'll get disgusted looks thrown your way. You can't make out with your Irish girlfriend in public; you can't even gently kiss her or hold her hand. And if she ever gets horribly sick, you can't visit her in the hospital. All because the two of you are Irish.
I don't think you'd call the people who'd put these restrictions into place "peaceable," Adam. So, shut the heck up.
