I think that around the time slavery was banned, the stronghold of the two parties switched. The Democrats won the North and the Republicans the south. IIRC. Im not an American so I may be wrong.

Hint: The conservative vote and ideology shifted from the Democrats to the Republicans in the mid 20th century. Once upon a time, your precious Republican party was generally more liberal than the Democrats (although it wasn't as "rawr liberal versus conservative" black and white politics as it is today). As far as I can remember, the only ideas that have remained the same in each party are government size and whether the country should be ran as a republic or a democracy -- hence the Republican party's interest in human rights.
I'm not even American, and I know this stuff.
Historically, liberal ideologies have done more for human rights than conservative ones. Liberal = forward thinking. Ergo, wanting to abolish slavery -- which was the norm at the time -- would have been a liberal ideology.

Yes, but the thing is that the Democratic Party was racist in the 1800s, and lost that later in the 1900s. The Republican Party started in the 1800s as the anti-racism party, and quickly picked up racism in the 1900s.
