Since you are on this website, you probably have a general knowledge of the two competing political camps in America, liberalism and conservatism. Surprisingly, a lot of people who live their lives in a conservative way vote for liberals, which is against their self-interest. To understand why this happens, let's look at the basic idea behind liberalism.
Liberals core principle or ideology is that the government should do for people what they cant do for themselves. This gives the government more power at the expense of the freedom of the people.
For instance, liberals don't think that people in general are capable of taking care of their own health. So they set up huge government agencies like Medicaire, Medicaid, and are even trying to nationalize health insurance. Of course, it takes a lot of tax money to pay for these liberal programs.
Liberals don't think people are capable of providing their own meals or paying their bills, so they set up Welfare programs and hand out food stamps and WIC (more tax money).
Liberals don't think people are capable of planning their own retirement, so they set up Social Security and block any efforts to change that broken system (more tax money).
Liberals don't think people are capable of managing their own education, so they set up public schools which happen to be run by more liberals (more tax money).
Liberals don't think people are capable of choosing their own lifestyle, so they pass laws that tell people what they can and can't eat and drink, where they can live, what they can listen to on the radio or watch on tv, what kinds of cars they will drive and how parents should raise their kids (less personal freedom).
Basically, liberalism is the belief that the average person is too dumb to take care of themself, so they need a big government to take care of them. Liberals believe that they are the smartest and most caring people, so they should run the government (more tax money) that takes care of the poor dumb people .
People vote for liberals because the idea of helping their neighbor through liberal social programs sounds good. But instead of helping them, these government programs create huge groups of people who will not be responsible for their own well-being.
Today, more than half of the people in the United States receive some kind of money from the government, and they are supported by the tax dollars of the minority. Financially, this cannot work in the long run.
Liberalism is socialism and marxism. It fails every time it is tried.

Says the asshole who hasn't got a clue what liberalism is. If your forefathers had been conservatives in the modern mold, you people would still be colonies of England.
As to the rest of your rant, were it not for the more progressive elements, read liberal, in American society, people in your country would still be working dangerous jobs for low pay with no hope of any retirement. As for health care, don't make me fucking laugh.

Anf voting conservative is voting for a theocracy - in other words, a Christian Iran.

"Surprisingly, a lot of people who live their lives in a conservative way vote for conservatives, which is against their self-interest."

Fixed.

If you replaced the word people/person with consevative, it would be pretty accurate.

"Liberals don't think people are capable of managing their own education, so they set up public schools which happen to be run by more liberals (more tax money). "

While conservatives tout homeskuuling as an important alternative to keeping those evil liberal ideas like evolution, atheism, and sex education out of our kid's precious minds. Because if we don't teach them about it, they'll never find out about it.

"Liberals don't think people are capable of choosing their own lifestyle, so they pass laws that tell people what they can and can't eat and drink, where they can live, what they can listen to on the radio or watch on tv, what kinds of cars they will drive and how parents should raise their kids (less personal freedom). "

While conservatives pass laws banning sale of alcohol on Sundays in some states, try to ban shows depicting homosexuals from TV, want stricter controls on what people watch on TV, and force music companies to put warning labels on albums.

"People vote for liberals because the idea of helping their neighbor through liberal social programs sounds good."

While conservatives seem to have no idea that the fictional person they worship wanted the exact same thing.

"Today, more than half of the people in the United States receive some kind of money from the government..."

Including rich conservatives who get great tax breaks from the government that us middle class people could only dream of.

I agree that this is batshit stupid, but it's not really fundie.

I'm sick of politics. If less people were selfish and stupid there wouldnt even be a need for government and politics.

So the next Republican candidate for Prez is going to run on a platform of ending all government spending on education, healthcare, welfare, the FDA and Social Security? Somehow, I don't think so.

People can't take care of their own health, even though they want to, largely because of capitalistic insurance companies and big pharma, which have driven healthcare costs through the roof and made doctors and medicine largely inaccesible to the poor-lower middle class. These insurance companies are also participating in healthcare rationing and "death panels" by withholding lifesaving treatment based on cost, but I never hear you screaming about that. I say we tear the whole system down and start over.

Many people, through no fault of their own, cannot provide their own meals or pay their bills. My father walked out on my mother and left her with three young children and no job. We were on welfare for a few months until she got back on her feet. There are a lot of elderly people receiving these services as well, so they don't have to eat cat food and do without electricity. Of course there are people who abuse the system. There are people who go to the emergency room because they have a cold, too, but I never hear anyone screaming that we should close all the ERs.

Many of you are not capable of educating your children yourselves. People cannot go through life any more signing their name with an "X". I was working down south years ago and a man came into our establishment and asked me to fill out a money order so he could pay his rent--because he could not read or write. This was a man in his 50s, and this happened only about ten years ago. This is why we must have public schools, to give YOUR children a fair chance at life. MY child would be educated quite well by me if it came down to it. Yours would not.

A good portion of the population is not capable of planning for retirement--my relative, for example. She is 60 and has no savings. She has always lived hand to mouth. There are many people like this. They never learned to plan for the future because they were too busy "hoping and praying" that things would work out okay.

Liberals DO think that people are capable of choosing their own lifestyle. They are trying to ensure that we all have the freedom to do that. YOU are the ones trying to force your lifestyle on others. And there ARE certain circumstances where the government needs to step in and regulate the things that go into our bodies, because big corporations would gladly feed us poison if they could make money off of it. There comes a point at which we have to start looking out for each other's welfare.

There are too many of us to live like pioneers any more, kids. We can't be every man for himself. We have to have some government, some regulations, some social programs to ensure that everyone gets an equal chance. You're being very disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

There's nothing "broken" about Social Security. What's broken is our tax system. We have two separate ones: one for Social Security (FICA) and one for everything else (FIT). Although most working people pay both, there is a huge amount of income that is only subject to FIT: investment income, rents, royalties, pensions and all wages in excess of $106,800. So people who pay FIT and FICA are, to a great extent, two different sets of people. By using FICA taxes to subsidize the FIT (by "borrowing" the so-called "Social Security surplus"), the government has effectively been transferring money from working people to hold down tax rates for the wealthy. Now the "surplus" is disappearing and the people who contributed to it want it back. naturally, the people who pay FIT are starting to position themselves politically to renege.

The evidence suggests that people AREN'T capable of taking care of their own health. The health insurance industry in this country, as it is currently run, certainly isn't helping.

People AREN'T capable of providing their own meals, paying their bills, or planning their own retirement. The average rate of savings in this country is -1%. People are spending more money than they have.

People AREN'T capable of managing their own education. Look at the conservative home schooling movement.

We DO, however say that people should be able to live their own lifestyle, and we want to make it safe for them to do so, so we ban harmful food additives, but we don't tell them where they can live (conservatives did that, it was called segregation), we don't tell them what they can listen to or watch (that's censorship, again, a conservative movement), we do tell them not to drive unsafe cars but again there's a good reason for that, and we only restrict how parents raise their children when their methods are harmful to the children in question.

The evidence suggests that, yes, the average person is too dumb to take care of him/herself.

"Liberalism is socialism and marxism. It fails every time it is tried."

France, Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, etc, beg to differ.

9/28/2009 8:32:40 AM

How can being liberal be the same as wanting to reduce freedom? The clue is in the name, really.

Privatising everything sure seems like a neat idea, but only if you're an idiot. The government has a duty of care for its people, surely, and should be able to provide everyone, not just the rich, with things like education and healthcare. It would possibly work if everyone were rich, but only a conservative would ignore everyone who can't afford such things.

Oh wait, you're probably a gun owner, so I should steal those too and use them to defend my squatting from you once I've declared you an intruder.

Liberals core principle or ideology is that the government should do for people what they cant do for themselves.

Yes. Doesn't it sound great? You can't pay for that treatment? Your fellow citizens help pay for it, because they care about you or, at least, because they know you'll pay for their treatments, if necesary.

And that's bad?

"For instance, liberals don't think that people in general are capable of taking care of their own health. So they set up huge government agencies like Medicaire, Medicaid, and are even trying to nationalize health insurance. Of course, it takes a lot of tax money to pay for these liberal programs."

It has nothing to do with thinking people aren't capable of taking care of themselves. It's the knowledge that some people have to choose between medicine, or food and rent, and no one should have to make that choice.

"Liberals don't think people are capable of providing their own meals or paying their bills, so they set up Welfare programs and hand out food stamps and WIC (more tax money)."

Again, some people have to choose between food and things like medicine and a place to live.

"Liberals don't think people are capable of planning their own retirement, so they set up Social Security and block any efforts to change that broken system (more tax money)."

And again, some people don't have the money to save for retirement. It's hard to put away a nest egg, when you don't have two pennies to rub together by the time the next paycheck comes in.

"Liberals don't think people are capable of managing their own education, so they set up public schools which happen to be run by more liberals (more tax money)."

I'll agree, the public education system needs some work, but most of that is in large part due to Dubya's no child left behind leaving all our children behind. It's still better than kids being homskuled by morons.

"Liberals don't think people are capable of choosing their own lifestyle, so they pass laws that tell people what they can and can't eat and drink, where they can live, what they can listen to on the radio or watch on tv, what kinds of cars they will drive and how parents should raise their kids (less personal freedom)."

You mean like conservatives who think everyone in america should be christian and heterosexual, and would see nothing wrong with passing laws in this regard? Although I don't agree with censorship of radio and tv, or with telling people what they can and cannot eat, or with telling business owners that they can't choose to allow smoking in their own establishment.

"Basically, liberalism is the belief that the average person is too dumb to take care of themself, so they need a big government to take care of them. Liberals believe that they are the smartest and most caring people, so they should run the government (more tax money) that takes care of the poor dumb people ."

How many times do we have to say it? It's not about thinking people are too dumb to take care of themselves, it's realizing that greedy corporations have a tendency to keep people too poor to afford to take care of themselves.

"People vote for liberals because the idea of helping their neighbor through liberal social programs sounds good. But instead of helping them, these government programs create huge groups of people who will not be responsible for their own well-being."

Better than a bunch of fundies who don't think they should have to be responsible for their actions because it's all either god or the devil that makes them do it, and they'll get off in the end anyway.

"Today, more than half of the people in the United States receive some kind of money from the government, and they are supported by the tax dollars of the minority. Financially, this cannot work in the long run."

Everyone pays taxes you dolt (unless they don't make enough to pay taxes), and the "minority" you speak of is the most wealthy percentage of society, who has the money to help pitch in for the services to help everyone else have what they need to survive.

What a despicable attempt at brainwashing.

The push to have public health care is happening because every twelve minutes, and American dies due to lack of health care. Not because they weren't "capable" or were too lazy to provide it for themselves, but because we have a system in which insurers profit by denying services and making premiums exorbitantly expensive. So clearly what liberals "believe" about people not being able to take care of their own health is fact.

Before we had that "failure" known as Social Security, the majority of elderly people in the nation lived in poverty. It is now wildly successful, and is regarded as a sacred institution, as is medicare. It was your precious Ronald Reagan who started it into decline, when he repeatedly borrowed from it to back up his huge deficits, and one member of his administration has admitted that Reagan deliberatly ran uo deficits in hopes that it would kill Medicare.

Welfare, which was originally implemented during the Great Depression (which was caused by so-called conservatives),would work as well as Social Security if the right-wing had'nt been so successful in slashing the benefits and criteria so low that those struggling to survive on it have to live on the brink of starvation and are prevented from ever being able to climb out of their situations and become self-sufficient for fear of missing the criteria the next month by a penny. They're already wearing rags and eating on less than three dollars a day, but that's still not enough punishment to please you people.

Conservatives have proven the point that they can't be trusted with kid's educations, since they refuse to teach science (that's real science, not stuff they make up to conform to the Bible), and lie their asses off about politics and economic matters. Case in point--- your website.

And last, as far as dictating others' lifestyles, it isn't liberals passing laws to prevent women from making choices about their bodies and gays from marrying, or trying to put their religious beliefs into school curriculum over yours, it's conservatives.

You shouldn't even be allowed contact with kids.
