Quote# 65916

My close friend has read Twilight, as did my older daughter. My friend said it was no big deal, but she is in her 40's. My daughter called it dumb. I would rather she had not succumbed to such trash.

For me, when people ask "have you read it?" my response is that I have read many reviews, done my research, and decided that it would not be pleasing to God. If it is a book, such as The Shack or the DaVinci Code, which twists the truth about the character of my God I would absolutely never read it. People who ask that question are typically trying to catch you, because then they reply that if you haven't read it you cannot make an intelligent assessment. Hogwash!

Why would God care what books you read? Jesus said love God and love your neighbor; have faith and be baptized. He didn't say "and don't read anything except "Left Behind" and the church news." If you can't read The Da Vinci Code without questioning your faith, you never had it in the first place. Don't blame Dan Brown for that.

So your daughter read it, thinks it's dumb...and you're still bitching.

You fundies still haven't figured out that when you make a big deal about something, it drives people TO it. You didn't get it in the 80s when you were bitching and moaning about rock and roll, and you don't get it now. All you are doing is putting more money in Stephenie Meyer's pocket. Way to go.

10/1/2009 7:45:45 AM

It isn’t hogwash. You have no right to say anything about a book you haven’t read, period.

I've heard that same bullshit argument from other fundies, and the truth is this: if you haven't seen the movie, read the book or heard the CD you do not have enough information upon which to base an opinion. To insist upon parroting the idiotic opinions of your pastor and other christians/conservatives who also haven't been exposed to the material not only makes you look mindless, it calls into question the collective intelligence of your entire community.

Try thinking for yourself for a change. Instead of allowing others to lead you about by the hand like a child, grow up and experience things for yourself. Go ahead, I promise it doesn't hurt. At least then you'll have an actual basis for your opinions and can hate innocuous things (or people, or media) in a more enlightened way.

The character of your god is very nicely illustrated within the bible, especially the old testament. Maybe you should try to read this one next time.
And not only the parts that your pastor or parents present to you, but also the parts that deal with gods dark and genocidal side ;)

Mr. Creazil

You'd think that fundies would love those books, with their outdated and offensive attitudes towards women and minorities, and their absurd emphasis on abstinence.

I suffered through Twilight to see what it was all about. While it is a trite and poorly written escape for 11 year old girls...it isn't evil.

So you can intelligently comment on things that you haven't read? You have done your research? Hogwash!

10/1/2009 8:06:52 AM

Lucilius

So if I'd never read your Babble, I'd be qualified to comment on it so long as I'd read a few things about it?

I have read parts of "Twilight," out of curiosity, and it is indeed crap. But that doesn't excuse this kind of stupid hypocrisy.

10/1/2009 8:11:21 AM

aaa

I can safely say that Twilight is crap.

If she thinks Twilight is "dumb" then she didn't succumb to the trash.

People who ask that question are typically trying to catch you, because then they reply that if you haven't read it you cannot make an intelligent assessment.

...and they would be right.

"My close friend has read Twilight, as did my older daughter. My friend said it was no big deal, but she is in her 40's. My daughter called it dumb. I would rather she had not succumbed to such trash."

One of us doesn't know the definition of succumbed, apparently.

If your daughter called it "dumb" I can't really see that she's succumbed to it.

"For me, when people ask "have you read it?" my response is that I have read many reviews, done my research, and decided that it would not be pleasing to God."

I guess he wouldn't like the fiction of someone else competing with his own.

"If it is a book, such as The Shack or the DaVinci Code, which twists the truth about the character of my God I would absolutely never read it."

Your own Bible and pretty much every document ever written on the subject of your god "twists the truth" of his character. Try reading what your Bible says about him from one book to another or what any of the major figures in Christian history have said. I think you'd find it pretty difficult to find any consistent characteristics between them.

"People who ask that question are typically trying to catch you, because then they reply that if you haven't read it you cannot make an intelligent assessment. Hogwash!"

Shouldn't you at least skim through the actual book itself before proclaiming it spawned by Satan himself?

Seriously, if I can trudge through fundy bullshit to familiarize myself with your insanity the least you people can do is flip through a few pages of a fucking fiction book before denouncing it.

Given that they prevent the reading of those particular awful books, part of me respects the views presented.

Lots of things can challenge faith. But you don't live like a hermit in the woods to avoid them, now, do you? I'm not saying you have to read the books (and I have and I wouldn't recommend them) but books do not contain brainwashing devices. People do.

Well, Twilight is crap. :p

Oh, I don't know. I think His_Bride is nutso from the fact she's on Rapture Ready, and that she's getting a little too worked up about the Twilight series. However, I've never read the entire bible (never could get through the "begats," but from what I have read of it, I think it's pure crap.

YOU cannot make an intelligent assessment, the guys and girls that wrote the reviews may have made an intelligent assessment [though, as I presume the reviews you read are mostly on RR, I highly doubt it] you can merely parrot this assessment, showing the intelligence of a tape recorder!

Translation: "My fellow Rapture Retards, who haven't read it either, say it's of the debil!

Also, I've read your "holy book," and the only conclusion a rational person can make is that at best it is the mythology of pig-ignorant goat herders and at worst a descrpiption of a fucked-up diety.

Fundies have told me that I have no business asking questions about the Holocaust until I've read every book on theodicy ever written. Get your story straight, and then come back to us.

What our little bride here doesn't get is that like most fiction, Twilight is not just about its background narrative (vampires). Fiction is about the human condition as it lives against the background narrative. So even though Bella's world is full of vampires, it's her actions throughout the book that are of interest. And quite frankly, her actions throughout the book are deplorable (does she even have a mind of her own? I ask you!). If you're going to condemn the book, don't just condemn it for it's vampire theme, condemn it because Bella is a poor role model for tweens and teenage girls.

I couldn't force myself to read past the first book, but I feel qualified to say-Twilight is crap indeed.

My close friend has read Twilight, as did my older daughter...My daughter called it dumb. I would rather she had not succumbed to such trash.

I am still so, so proud of your daughter, for multiple reasons.

I mean, my sister (whom I also consider intelligent) read it and alternately cringed and laughed when she read it. Being honest, I couldn't force myself to read it (I've never gotten the love for vampires, despite being female), so I've never read it, but:

While I do have an English degree, I don't look down on "inferior" literature as a rule; I love science-fiction but generally dislike fantasy for example. But even I have to agree, Twilight is bad for many reasons, not the least of which is that "Stalking is good!" and "Be helpless, that'll just make him fall in love with you more!" [/giant eyeroll]

I've read on the web bits and pieces about the Jesus flyers of America as told by various whooshmeisters and I think the whole idea is hogwash. Like who wouldn't?

The questions remains, for all your argument. How can you judge what you have not seen or read?

If you wnat to be taken seriously, then you must provide some kind of reasonable answer.

If not, then you have to be an empty-headed bigot.

God do you people have to shit yourselves EVERY TIME your kids read a fucking book? Seriously?
