Oh, and a wedding is often a religious ceremony (though it doesn't have to be), but marriage is a government-acknowledge legal status.

In our society it is the State that decides who can and cannot be married, not the church. The State merely gives the power to churches to officate at the ceremony,. It can also be taken away. You are a dumbass.

Nope, totally wrong.

In Germany, it was even forbidden by law since Bismarck's times until some years ago that a religious wedding takes place before the civil marriage. You HAD to go first to the civil registrar. After that, you were free to go to a church. The church is optional. The civil registrar is NOT optional. Doing a religious wedding without a civil marriage was a punishable offense.

The reason for this law: To make absolutely clear that the civil ceremony is the real thing, and that the religious ceremony is nothing but a nice, but nevertheless irrelevant ritual. This law was introduced when the churches became too impertinent and claimed barefaced that only them have the right to marry people, and too many people did a religious marriage and thought wrongly that they were now legally married. Bismarck introduced this law to put the churches back into their place.

Mmmkay. First, marriage has some religious basis, perhaps, but that religious basis can be wholly circumvented, and the legal status will remain. At it's core, in today's society, it is a legal contract first. Any religious connotations are added after the fact, if at all. Second, there are plenty of homosexual Christians. And homosexuals of all other faiths. Much as you would like to believe we are soulless fuck machines, we are...brace yourself for it...human beings, too.
