Sounds like the waiting rooms at Castle Garden or Ellis Island must have sounded.

And why should they be humble? I'm sure your relatives humbly asked the Native Americans if they could please share the land, right?

I always thought one of the mantras of the US was welcoming immigrants from the world over.
(Of course, they were always picky about the immigrants in question. But that's another book for another day.)
But back to my point: Why do you assume those people didn't speak (or write, or read) English? How do you think they get around without knowning the language?
And what, exactly, is the problem with people around you speaking languages that aren't English? Are you.... afraid?
Maybe it's time you get your head out of your ass and learn a foreign language. Los que pueden hablar dos idiomas ganan mas que los que solamente hablan un idioma. ;-)

Um... sounds like a typical day in a busy urban part of Florida. There's a reason why they call Miami the capital of Latin America you know.
Move to North Dakota if you don't want to be around people who aren't White and speak exclusively English. Not at all as warm as Florida but hey, if you really don't like it, LEAVE.

I found this comment left by someone who responded to the original comment. It was so good I had to post it:
"So a racist walks into a hospital room....
How did you identify five (5) different nationalities?
Are you the United Nations of Linguistics?"

Of course if meercat went to France (HAHAHAHA) he would be fluent in French before he left? Also, if he ran into a fellow American, he'd only speak French, after all, he's in France.
No? What a surprise.

ya know, i havent any of TRAC's comments recently. Whatever happened to the guy?
10/14/2009 10:21:35 PM
What bothers you about people speaking different languages? Are you that nosy you need to understand everything strangers are talking about?

TRAC? He got better.

A crowded clinic waiting room full of grumpy sick people, you tell 'em! Stop being grumpy and sick and be humble and appreciative goddamnit!
*dodges flying crutch*
Now THAT wasn't very humble and appreciative sir!

Nothing requires anyone to act humble, not even being an immigrant.

The best part is that the subject of the thread is a Dobbs video about some immigration reform bill from 2007. The vast majority of the posts in the thread don't seem to understand this and they seem to think that this is somehow Obama's doing related to health care. what a bunch of fucking morons.

Ukrainians and Serbians aren't white?
I really am not well versed on what is and isn't white, being Italian and all.
10/15/2009 8:20:24 AM
meercat didn't mention race, just said "immigrants."

I walked around London for 4 hours a few years back (killing time waiting for my passport to be renewed) and on only one occasion did I walk past people on the street speaking English, obviously I'd hardly claim that those who speak English as a second language should use it always, even to each other, but it was somewhat disconcerting.
I suppose it was an unaccustomed feeling of being a minority that I found odd, and it was enlightening to a degree.
However I do intensely dislike it when I see a couple or group chatting away in their native language while standing next to myself or other native English speakers, making it fairly clear that they are having a conversation about me/the group in front of us, knowing full well that we can't understand, it's just plain rude, and if I was in a non-English-speaking country I would not conduct conversations about the locals in English while standing next to them, because it's rude and disrespectful.

Try going to a clinic in Eastern Kentucky, where my family's from. You'll see the same scene with all pasty-white faces, and you won't exactly hear English spoken there either.

Well, they don't have to apologise for existing.

"They wore Italian leather long coats ."
How do you know? Did you ask them? Did you just happen to speak Ukranian? No, of course not, speaking a foreign language is un-American, isn't it?
"It was very depressing what we have done to this country with our appeasing, complacency ."
Well, why didn't you whip out an Uzi and start gunning them down? Show them that America is only for real Americans (that is, people who own guns and love to use them, and oh yeah, vote Republican).

Vegetable Rights Activist
So, Ukranians will destroy America with awesome coats?
Is that what he is saying?
10/15/2009 1:31:04 PM
Meh. He never said anything about race. He just wants things all American. He never said all Americans have to be white. He never even claimed to be white. And wanting things to be all American doesn't automatically mean you're white. Some of the most hardcore anti-illegal immigration activists here in SoCal, are not white. I think some people on here are misinterpreting this.

Google needs an English to Cherokee translator. That might help him be more American.

Can you say melting Pot. MEL-TING-POT! Knew ya could!
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
