Quote# 66808

[Re. Christopher Columbus]

"...and how CAN you discover something that Indians DISCOVERED thousands of years before hand"

With ships. If the Indians wanted to take credit, they should have written it down. Camp fire tales and crayon drawings don't count. Savages don't count. They're just part of the scenery. History is based on the written record, of civilizations. not humpy dwelling, story tellers. If one couldn't be bothered inventing the wheel, why should one get credit for merely shuffling onto a paddock? The Bison did that too.

This one seems to be correct, maybe a little harsh, but in no way false.

If you come to some distant country and there's already a whole people living there, you're obviously not the first.

When people say "Columbus discovered America" they obviously "for Europeans", and even that's not totally true.

Yama the Space Fish

Uh, Maya had writing.

Fuck Moonhitlery. Fuck everyone on Moonhitlery.

10/27/2009 4:13:44 PM

Yeah. Because the Bible too was a story, dumbass.

Oral history is very important. Just because most of Europe were illiterate savages killing each other over religion doesn't mean that the Native Americans were like that.

10/27/2009 4:50:39 PM

LOL, Anthropological and Historical fail.

10/27/2009 5:44:16 PM

I know some Norse vikings that would like to have a word with you and your sucky history. They seem to have noticed the natives were already here.

10/27/2009 9:37:37 PM

Why haven't i punched you to the face?

10/28/2009 2:12:29 AM

History is based on the written record, of civilizations.

If you're of European origin as opposed to, say, Chinese, you're on very thin ice with that argument. I gather they were writing shit down way before we were.

Eddie Izzard said it was flags. I'd go with Eddie.

Tolpuddle Martyr

Didn't the Romans pretty much have that opinion of the Celtic and Germanic people? Part of the scenery, savages who don't count, no written languages, no cities so therefore unpeople to be enslaved or slaughtered by their "civilised" conquerors. I'd wager they were probably Mr chairman's ancestors.

I confess to being slightly impressed that someone on Moonshittery has heard of the Oprichniki. *

* - Ivan the Terrible's political police. Well, it makes a change from Hitler, doesn't it?

Yama the Space Fish

Why would they refer to them as Gestapo? Aren't Gestapo the good guys in Moonshittery world?

10/28/2009 8:16:52 AM

Dr. Novakaine

Discoveries are relative, true enough, but being an ass about it is not necessary.

Anyway, none of the Native Americans ever mistook Cuba for Japan, so that puts them one up on Columbus for a start.

10/28/2009 11:53:28 AM

It's Moonbattery. That says it all.

10/28/2009 12:21:40 PM

The Aztecs and Mayans DID write things down.

Guess who burned their books?

10/28/2009 12:41:22 PM

Darth Vader

Vinland Saga, bitch! Listen to it.

10/28/2009 3:41:37 PM

Yama the Space Fish

As did the Mixtecs, Olmecs, and Toltecs.

And Ethiopians.

Other native American groups had limited sets of ideographs.

10/28/2009 4:23:02 PM

Let's see, THEY WERE HERE FIRST, you fail.

10/29/2009 12:21:59 AM

Savages who handed out smallpox-infected blankets in an attempt to commit genocide should count for something in the shitstory books.

Then again, fucksticks like you probably can't read.

10/29/2009 12:32:04 AM

Average Guy

Uh, because they were first there?

Oh, wait, it's Batshittery, 'nuff said.

10/29/2009 6:49:56 AM

Tolpuddle Martyr for the win.

10/29/2009 7:45:21 AM

@Anon: What do you mean, "correct" or "a little harsh?" This moron just reduced Native Americans to the status of "humpy dwelling story tellers." Columbus was NOT the first one to discover the Americas, not even by European standards. As others have mentioned before, the Vikings, who came from Scandinavia, which is in EUROPE, already sailed to the Americas centuries before Columbus did.

And the Mayans and the Aztecs DID write things down. They were highly advanced civilizations. Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) was the size of any large European city. When the Spaniards invaded Mexico, they destroyed most of the Mayan and Aztec literature out of xenophobia, religious bigotry, stupidity, and spite.

Don't defend this steaming pile of bigotry. It's not worth it.

10/29/2009 7:49:29 AM

Following your logic, your civilisation shouldn't exist. The Celts didn't write anything either.

10/30/2009 1:21:46 PM

You know they built Tenochitalan... A floating city...
