Quote# 67503

[First comment under a news story about a pro-atheism billboard in Lakeland, Florida.]

I do belive that alot of intelligent people belive in Jesus. I do know that this country was founded on it. Why do you think America started. For our freedom of religion and Freedom of our speech. George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and many more founded this country on God. You take God out, and you have this complete AND utter chaos, people killing each other, CHILDREN KILLING THEIR PARENTS, AND PARENTS KILLING THEIR CHILDREN, RANDOM KILLINGS FOR A PAIR OF SHOES, and drug addiction that is out of control.Families vanishing, and no protection from our God (talked about this in the bible written over 2000 years ago). This is where we need to be verbal and state our religion get our facts out there so people will start seeing the wrongs of this country. WE are not perfect people we all are wrong in one way or the other, but for now it is hard to hear certain gestures on this site. We all are human and we need to find our peace and humility again. WE ARE ALL GOD'S CHILDREN HE CREATED US OUT OF HIS OWN IMAGE YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT!! Each child you have the more trouble he gets in the more punished he/she gets. The same with us the more we stray from God and ignore he exists the more he punishes us. We all fall short of the Glory of God and we all have sinned. No matter the religion no matter where you are in life. This is why we need to stand together as a nation. God would start to shine his light once again and we would once again be a great nation.

Abraham Lincoln was not a founding father.

Umm, no.

And you are a fucking idiot.

Stop trying to link modern christian fundamentalism to the U.S. founding fathers. They were far more progressive and enlightened than the anti-science bigots that are today's fundies.

George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and many more founded this country on God.

Abe Lincoln was not one of our nation's founders. Any second grader knows that.

So much for intelligent christian.

You take God out, and you have this complete AND utter chaos, people killing each other, CHILDREN KILLING THEIR PARENTS, AND PARENTS KILLING THEIR CHILDREN, RANDOM KILLINGS FOR A PAIR OF SHOES

These things happen in theocracies too.

CHILDREN KILLING THEIR PARENTS, AND PARENTS KILLING THEIR CHILDREN, RANDOM KILLINGS FOR A PAIR OF SHOES, HUMAN SACRIFICE, DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER... MASS HYSTERIA!

George Washington was a confirmed deist. He didn't believe in your god, just a general, uninvolved creator god. Abraham Lincoln was openly critical of christianity before becoming president.

I'm just going to hope that you're ignorant and just haven't gotten around to reading any quotes from the founding fathers about God and Chrisitianity.

So this means that Pre-Edo Japan, Han China, Shilla/Koguryo Korea, and other 1st and 2nd century civilizations away from the Middle East after Jesus were all cesspits of violence and insanity.

Sure.

If taking God out of society ruins it, it sure is taking a while to have that effect on, oh, the better part of Europe. In France, for instance, less than half of the population believes in God, and they're not exactly killing each other: their life expectancy is 3 years longer than that of the US. (Source)

"I do belive that alot of intelligent people belive in Jesus."

Doubtless.

"I do know that this country was founded on it."

Founded on a lot of intelligent people believing in Jesus?

That's not what I learned in school...

"Why do you think America started."

Well, there was this guy in England who thought he could do any damned thing he pleased because of his title, much like your god, and some people didn't seem to think he had that right, among other things.

"For our freedom of religion and Freedom of our speech."

Those are part of those "other things" I mentioned above, yes, but those aren't the only reasons.

"George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and many more founded this country on God."

Lincoln could travel through time!?

Holy fuck! Why wasn't I told that in school?

"You take God out, and you have this complete AND utter chaos, people killing each other, CHILDREN KILLING THEIR PARENTS, AND PARENTS KILLING THEIR CHILDREN, RANDOM KILLINGS FOR A PAIR OF SHOES, and drug addiction that is out of control. Families vanishing, and no protection from our God (talked about this in the bible written over 2000 years ago)."

Watch your footing. There's a slippery slope around here somewhere...

"This is where we need to be verbal and state our religion get our facts out there so people will start seeing the wrongs of this country."

Yeah. Get verbal and state your religion. This "Christianity" thing intrigues me. After all, I've never encountered it and would just love to hear more. Has it been around long?

"WE are not perfect people we all are wrong in one way or the other, but for now it is hard to hear certain gestures on this site. We all are human and we need to find our peace and humility again."

This is the only sensible thing you've said so far.

"WE ARE ALL GOD'S CHILDREN HE CREATED US OUT OF HIS OWN IMAGE YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT!!"

In his image you say? Care to explain why the human body is remarkably ill designed, is prone to disease and disability and comes with a host of genetic quirks, some of which can be fatal, when it was "designed" by an omnipotent designer?

"Each child you have the more trouble he gets in the more punished he/she gets."

Yes, but most parents don't roast their kids in a burning pit for all eternity. Most wouldn't even threaten such a thing.

"The same with us the more we stray from God and ignore he exists the more he punishes us."

It seems quite ineffective. Perhaps he should read Dr. Spock and pick up a few parenting skills.

"We all fall short of the Glory of God and we all have sinned. No matter the religion no matter where you are in life."

I get tired of asking this but, show "sin" exists. We'll get to your god after you've completed that task.

"his is why we need to stand together as a nation. God would start to shine his light once again and we would once again be a great nation."

Since the last brain dead fuck up is out of office we're well on our way. Oddly enough, your god is nowhere to be found.

As examples she picks Washington and Lincoln. That's truly funny. Oh, and she left out Robert G. Ingersoll.

What IS it with this fixation on "Founding Fathers = Christians"? Time and again they've been shown that it's a erroneous idea, and they still cling to it.

Let's see what the damage is:

1) Failing to understand why America split from Britain.
2) Claiming that Lincoln was involved in founding the country.
3) Claiming that people cannot be good without God.
4) Claiming your religion teaches facts.

Fuck, I'm losing count. This post is a mess.

"I do belive that alot of intelligent people belive in Jesus. "

So do I.

"I do know that this country was founded on it."

Jesus is an it now? And no it wasn't.

"You take God out, and you have this complete AND utter chaos, people killing each other, CHILDREN KILLING THEIR PARENTS, AND PARENTS KILLING THEIR CHILDREN, RANDOM KILLINGS FOR A PAIR OF SHOES, and drug addiction that is out of control."

Yeah, this has nothing to do with God, any other god, or a lack thereof. This is people not thinking about others' feelings/rights/etc. This has always happened.

"This is where we need to be verbal and state our religion get our facts out there so people will start seeing the wrongs of this country."

On the contrary. You can state your religion all you want. The vast majority of us have heard it many, many, many, many, many times. Some of us grew up in it, others were in it voluntarily. We're not ignorant of your religion, and a good number of us know how wrong your religion is for so many people.

"We all are human"

You need to say this to yourself, again. Remember that "we" includes -everyone-. Think about how you feel about things. Now imagine how a gay person feels about things. I don't suppose you would believe that you and gay people feel the same way about a lot of things: like truly loving a particular person, or being put down for something you in no way chose. Now imagine how an atheist feels about things. Guess what? We ARE all human, and we ALL feel certain things the same way!

"we need to find our peace and humility again."

No kidding.

"Each child you have the more trouble he gets in the more punished he/she gets."

Either I misunderstand you, or you have a very strange parenting method. (Edit: my brain got stuck on "each child you have" and interpreted that as "the more kids you have the more punishment they get")

"The same with us the more we stray from God and ignore he exists the more he punishes us."

Which is why I feel better now "ignoring God" (belief in nonexistence is not the same as ignoring, believe it or not), spending my weekends somewhere I want to be doing something that I know actually helps, even if it's in a tiny way?

I do belive that alot of intelligent people belive in Jesus.

At least one part of your posting which is totally correct. There are lots of intelligent christians and they usually belong to the moderate parts of christianity. It is only thanks to fundamentalist christianity (which has lots of people with a profound lack of intelligence/education) that (american) christianity gets a lot of bad PR.
