\"and is a few minutes of \"inner peace\" worth a lifetime of insanity?\"
Funny, that's the same way I view x-tianity.

I meditate on a fairly regular basis as of late.
I'm actually less mentally frayed than before I started.
Incidentally, isn't prayer suspiciously similar to meditative chants?

I find that deep meditative breathing helps calm my nerves. It makes me saner.

How. The FUCK. Does that work? Taking a moment or two to get your bearings and calm your nerves can damage your psyche? Do these people actually think...?

And where exactly is this much-vaunted 'much proof'?

Gee, I thought prayer was an opportunity to connect with the Divine. Inner Peace, Guidance--that kind of stuff.

I doubt anyone will ever read this comment (and doubt even more that I'll think to check back to see if anyone has), but I will point out that this is a bare sliver of truth to this: Zazen ("Zen meditation," which is actually redundant, since "zen" *means* meditation) has various benefits, but it does increase the risk of suffering depersonalization, which can be a truly horrifying experience. In a way, this is unsurprising, since arguably the only real difference between realizing anatta and suffering depersonalization is how the new perspective on reality is perceived.

In reality, meditation and prayer are very similair. But in Fundie World, the term "meditation" conjures images of eastern traditions, so its evil. Same goes with Karma. Proverbs says you reap what you sow, Golden Rule, etc. But if you label that concept "Karma", then its The Devil

No inner peace! If you're not constantly fearing for your life because a deity is constantly watching you and waiting for you to screw up once so he can send you to the eternal barbecue because he has no idea how negative reinforcement works, you're not living.

There is much proof? What, you tried it, hurt yourself getting out of the lotus position and started to cry?
