It was amongst "intellectuals" that Communism found its most enthusiastic supporters; the people who shilled for them, denied their numerous absurdities and atrocities and championed such regimes long after it was obvious to everyone else that they sucked serious balls were the "intellectual" elite.
And it's not just Communism's Western cheerleaders either: The 20th Century's greatest mass murderers Pol Pot (in terms of ratio of population) and Mao (by sheer numbers killed) both acquired their Communist activism while studying at Paris and Beijing universities respectively.
Outside of shilling for totalitarian dictators, the intelligentsia's reality dodging treasonsous dumbassery doesn't diminish, even when their nations are facing imminent destruction: even when Britain stood alone against Germany in 1940, when the Wermacht was 12 miles from the coast and the Luftwaffe was bombing the crap out of its cities, Orwell noted with disgust that certain "intellectuals" still couldn't bring themselves to support their nation's war efforts, seemed to get a grim satisfaction from every Allied setback, refused to believe the Axis could be defeated long after it was obvious to everyone else they couldn't win and even opposed America sending troops to Britain, believing they were really there to suppress an imminent prolaterian revolution (to which he remarked that "one has to belong to the intelligentsia to believe something like that. A normal person could never be such a fool").
Oh, and if you want to see the "intellectual" left's contribution to infant mortality rates, read up on what happened thanks to their campaign against DDT.

Really? Communism's biggest supporters were the proletariats actually. You know, the working-class. The people that didn't have time for education. And you want to know something? Under Lennin's reign, every last one of the proletariats were made literate. Funny, isn't it?
If you're that much against the "intelligensia", as you put it, go and join an Amish Community -- or, better yet, try going on a missions trip to, say, Congo or Nigeria -- and see what life is like without the aid of the scientist, the thinker, the inventor, and under the hand of theocracy.
George Orwell is the "intellectual left", fool.
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it." -- Orwell, "Why I Write" (1946).
"Smart people are smarter than me, I must now try to defame them so I can be more important"
That's what I get out of it anyways.
Honestly, if you're going to go this way that all are bad because of a few, then all christians are morally broken and evil because some lie and shoot/bomb people
@I Read About the Afterlife: Actually, the proletariat is specifically the urban working class, which is an important distinction when considering Russia: The peasantry, who formed a far larger portion of the total working class, overwhelmingly supported the Socialist Revolutionaries (SRs/esers) against the Bolsheviks.
Also, proletariat is a collective noun. One urban worker is a proletarian, several of them together are proletarians.
@David B.: Orwell was an intellectual leftist; he also wrote precisely what Smorfia48 claims he wrote about other, more idiotic, intellectual leftists, which just goes to show that talking about "the intellectual left" as a monolith is stupid.
Regarding the OP: I am always infuriated by the morons who can't seem to understand that the treaties banning DDT all made a specific exception for use in disease vector control, and it is still used for that purpose, albeit to a limited extent.
Translation: "Anyone who gets an education is a Nazi Communist liberal!!!!"
And DDT was found to harm wildlife as well as human life. The ban on DDT is one of the major factors in the comeback of the bald eagle.
"Oh, and if you want to see the "intellectual" left's contribution to infant mortality rates, read up on what happened thanks to their campaign against DDT."
Deaths from malaria (including infant deaths) dropped by 75%. Deaths from DDT poisoning (including infant deaths) dropped by 99%.
DDT? You mean the shit that started appearing everywhere in the food chain because we couldn't be bothered with some mosquitoes? the same shit that nearly wiped out several bird species and is still found in humans today, cpotentially causing harm to us? Yeah, that stuff.
A) There is nothing wrong with communism by itself. Problem is, it has never been applied in a democratic manner.
B) DDT? Seriously? Read Rachael Carson's book "Silent Spring"
Mass DDT spraying on farms caused the rise of DDT-resistant mosquito species. Banning DDT was necessary to preserve any chance of bringing it back as a viable pesticide. It wasn't harmful to humans, but those toxin-resistant mosquitoes certainly are. The damage to bird populations was extremely detrimental to mosquito reduction efforts, as one small bird eats hundreds of mosquitoes per year.
Whoever is selling tin foil to Smorfia48 must be one rich MF.
Oh, and Orwell was a socialist intellectual, moron, and it was the Soviets who destroyed Hitler's armies.
The Americans, and to a lesser extent the British, mopped up on some fourth-rate German troops in Western Europe and defeated the mighty *cough* Italian army.
The only ridiculous thing in this this is the last sentence. I'd love to know what's so crazy about the rest. There was a lot of cheerleading of communist régimes in the 20th century.
@ I Read About The Afterlife, tell that to the Constitutent Assembly. I think you'll find that literacy doesn't do proletariaNs (members of the proletariaT) much good when all they have available to read is what's approved by the totalitarian state.
Sorry, this shouldn't be here. OK, I realise that the OP is trying to smear all left-leaning educated people with a very broad brush, but if his remarks are applied to actual Communists and Communist supporters in the 1930s and 40s, he's right on the money. And yes, that is a genuine Orwell quote, and what's more he was right. Orwell had seen Soviet Communism close up, in Spain, and he (unlike many others) had no illusions about it or its idiot supporters.
"Oh, and if you want to see the "intellectual" left's contribution to infant mortality rates, read up on what happened thanks to their campaign against DDT."
What the motherfucking hell? DDT? Please quote, chapter and verse, where you got any fucking information about DDT doing any good for infant mortality rates. I seem to remember the stuff playing havoc with local wildlife and causing health issues in people who didn't wash it off the plants well enough.
Banning the stuff, in the long run killed more mosquitoes than the actual use of DDT ever did.
Once again bashing intellectuals while enjoying the many wonderful inventions and discoveries made by them.
By the way, truly left-leaning countries tend to have lower infant mortality rates and DDT was potentially toxic to people as well.
It is a trend among the American Right Wing to demonize intellectuals. The Creationist morons have done it with any scientist supporting evolution, an ancient universe, or anything that disagrees with their narrow literal interpretation of the Bible. The anti-vaccination crowd is doing it with real medicine. The Republicans are doing it with any progressive measure brought forth by the Democrats, branding it socialist or communist, distinctions which are totally lost on their idiot constituents, witness the furor over "death panels", a non-existent measure in the Health Care Reform bill.
This intense distrust of intellectuals by the poorly educated will be their downfall. Where would America be if all the smart people left for greener pastures?
Confused?
