My wife made a good observation yesterday when we were talking about this story, and that is, 'hey, wait a minute, the Taliban and the extremists, what is it they say just before they blow themselves up or kill somebody, they say Allahu Akbar.' If anybody's making this a religious thing, they started it.

Allahu Akhbar means "Praise God" or "God is great". Anyone killing in the name of their God will say the same thing.
And by this point it really doesn't matter who started it. Too many people have died in the name of both Gods and both governments.
So your wife is comparing U.S. soldiers to the Taliban and other Islamists? Given the number of Evangelicals apparently now in the U.S. Army, they might not be that dissimilar.

In a spirit of generosity and religious good will, Muslim soldiers in NATO say they're now willing to use the biblically themed rifle sights if the Christians are willing to have Koranic verses on theirs.
Way to go Muslims! And Christians, here's your chance to obey your Lord's command do unto others as you would have them do unto you! Go for it and prove you're not merely the bigoted hypocrites every other religion thinks you are.
What's interesting is that the west has been meddling in middle east affairs for over 60 years. Bin Laden pulled his groups together to stop this meddling and used Religion as catalyst to justify his actions. Bush and Co also used the religious argument against the taliban.
The word evil has been thrown by both sides since before the invasion of Iraq. Right-wing Christians in Fox and society both see this as just not a war of oil,democracy or the removal of terrorism but as a war to convert Islam to Christianity, based, nearly comically,(certainly with total ignorance of history) on the premise that Christianity stops war, bloodshed or dictatorships
Christianity is older than Islam. Btw; the Crusades, the Inquisitions.
