Quote# 70717

The whole survival of the fittest description of nature is totally false. Animals are not in competition, they are co-operative beings, nature is much more social than they claim. Evolution just reflects the racist capitalist imperialist victorian ideology that was around the time that it was produced, believing that there were biological hierarchies, to justify white colonial rule of the rest of the world. Plus it's still a theory, and what about the whole issue of the transitional fossils?

Is there an award for unnecessary anachronistic arguments?

By the way, Wikipedia is a great tool.

Darwin first used [Herbert] Spencer's new phrase "survival of the fittest" as a synonym for "natural selection" in the fifth edition of On the Origin of Species, published in 1869. Darwin meant it is a metaphor for "better adapted for immediate, local environment", not the common inference of "in the best physical shape". Hence, it is not a scientific description, and is both incomplete and misleading. [1]

The only real use it gets now is with creationist strawmen who try to undermine evolutionary theory* by comparing it to racism and white supremacy.

*Even AiG thinks you shouldn't use that.

and what about the whole issue of the transitional fossils?

What about it? Last I checked the only issue with them is that fundies like yourself refuse to acknowledge their existence even when they're right in front of your face.

2/19/2010 9:17:02 AM

Yes, animals cooperate................to eat each other.

2/19/2010 10:17:44 AM

Doubting Thomas

And you totally misunderstand the phrase "survival of the fittest." It doesn't mean "kill or be killed," it means "the animals best suited for an environment live on, and those not tend to die out on their own."

And every fossil is a transitional fossil, idiot. There's no such thing as a crocoduck.

2/19/2010 10:25:57 AM

Ah, you're as dumb as all the other fundies.

2/19/2010 10:50:02 AM

Tell you what then, you just get naked and go and survive in the environment of your choice. Make sure it has lots of predators so you can see how well you can cooperate with them.

2/19/2010 11:14:18 AM

Someone's never been given a team project at work. Whenever I have we'll all work pleasantly and cooperate until our smiles crack... but we're each ruthlessly trying to outdo the others and if (when) the shit hits the fan the claws come out!

2/19/2010 11:14:57 AM

Scientific theory...you're doing it wrong.

2/19/2010 11:32:41 AM

So how about those wolves "co-operating" with their prey by singling out the young, the old and the sick? Or how about trees growing in the forest where the ones that grow the fastest "co-operate" by blocking out the sun for all the others? Or the cats and dogs that "co-operated" with Grand Cayman blue iguanas by very nearly wiping them off the fact the Earth?

And for the last time, there are TONS of transitional fossils.

2/19/2010 11:34:01 AM

Well, this is a new approach. Still way wrong though.

2/19/2010 11:34:37 AM

Well that's a first, rejecting evolution on political grounds.

2/19/2010 12:01:02 PM

Animals ARE co-operative, within their own species and within the bounds of various forms of symbiosis. It's not all against all, it's some against some. Symbiosis only occurs when either both species benefit or one species can't do anything about it.

How I wish there was a situation where two creationists of two different religions clashed.

Watch the god damned Discovery channel once in a while!

2/19/2010 12:43:52 PM

Bambi was not a fucking documentary.

When you've watched wolves circle a moose that has fallen through the ice, you tell me how co-operative they're being. They weren't exactly forming a wolf chain to help the beast out.

I really want to grab these idiots and leave them with their 'forest friends'. Hell the polar bears are starving, they wont think twice about eating human.

Zeus Almighty

Survival of the fittest? Check.
"Evolution is 'just' a theory?" Check
"Gratuitous reference to 'transitional fossils?'" Check.

Damn, if only you had shoehorned the homosexual agenda into the post you'd have had a hat trick.
However, you do get points toward the random-stringing-of-unrelated-buzzwords award with "racist, capitalist, imperialist, victorian ideology."
Please try again.

Not very observant nor well read, are you, Laila?

2/19/2010 1:45:01 PM

Yeah, that lion is totally cooperating with the zebra there.

Old Viking

Try going out and living with the wild animals. See how nicely they 'cooperate' with helping you... be their dinner.

Okay, just one thing ... where is that portal to the Middle Ages, where social hierarchies were justified by the "Divine Right of Kings?" We'll gladly take you back there so you can go home. Better grab on to something by the way, gravity is just a theory too. You will fail less if you STOP LISTENING TO BULLSHIT ARTISTS!

As a very wise man once said, "The lion and the lamb are going to lay down together, but the lamb isn't going to get much sleep".

Jezebel's Evil Sister

The lion and the lamb may lie down together.

But the lamb ain't getting back up.

EDIT: Dang it! Colgate beat me to it by 3 minutes!

Ewok Jack

Ever seen the BBC's Planet Earth? Awesome nature documentary. No, you're right, it's basically just a whole bunch of animals cooperating, just like on Super Pets.
