Quote# 70717

The whole survival of the fittest description of nature is totally false. Animals are not in competition, they are co-operative beings, nature is much more social than they claim. Evolution just reflects the racist capitalist imperialist victorian ideology that was around the time that it was produced, believing that there were biological hierarchies, to justify white colonial rule of the rest of the world. Plus it's still a theory, and what about the whole issue of the transitional fossils?

Animals aren't in competition? So this image showing a lion eating a mara winning a battle and getting food?:

Well the lion gets food, the mara gets...death? Everybody wins?

Mrs. Antichrist

Go watch a lion hunting prey on the savanna or warring between different groups of chimpanzees, and then let me know if you still think nature is cooperative.

You know, I love The Lion King, too, but cooperation between species was never exactly the point of the circle of life (heck, when the lions and hyenas start cooperating - if you can call it that - everything went to hell). It was more about respect for the necessity of other lifeforms, sort of a 'worthy foe' thing.

Richard Attenborough learnt all he knows about nature from playing John Hammond in 'Jurassic Park'. It's his brother David you're quoting ;-)

I read about the afterlife

Uh, it's called adapting to nature and I suppose you haven't noticed that animals who are weak or deformed are generally eaten pretty cool.

Mouse: Hey buddy, in light of my superior numbers and your astronomical daily protein needs why don't ya just eat me friend?
Cat: Why thank you kindly, mind if I torture you a little before consuming your flesh?
Mouse: Sure pal, knock yourself out.

To be fair to the original poster, this has been a metaphorical "bone of contention" so to speak, ever since Darwin incorporated the concept of "survival of the fittest", which was originated by Herbert Spencer, in the 5th Edition of On The Origin Of Species...
For example, several Russian thinkers at the time such as, A.N Bekatov, S.I Korzhinskii, I.I Mechinkov & perhaps the most noted (although for other reasons) Prince P.E Kroptkin, although finding the concept of Evolution perfectably acceptable per se, disagreed with the concept of "Survival of the Fittest"...
As a result, they published various theories to account for their disagreement with Malthus, such as Kropotkin's theory of Mutual Aid, & Korzhinskii's theory of Heterogenesis...

So is quantum mechanics, but that doesn't stop you from using transistors to make a fool of yourself in public.

What about it?
