Wrong again. God has nothing to do with marriage. Traditional marriage is an economical and political agreement between two families or clans, meant to unite them in an alliance and strengthen both. It is also an effective way of institutionalizing sexuality, particularly female sexuality. Not because it is immoral, but because a daughter who gives birth outside wedlock is worthless in the transaction. Learn history.

Jedi Knight is correct. Marriage was a business/political transaction (and still is in some places), only recently has it become a symbol of love.
Also to me it seems that the modern equivalent of a dowery is that the bride's family traditionally pays for the wedding.
