"A small town Mississippi High School has decided to cancel its school prom after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) demanded the school permit a female student to wear a tux to the prom and attend with her lesbian partner. Now the ACLU is suing the school, asking the courts to force the Itawamba County School District to hold the prom and permit 18-year-old Constance McMillen to attend with her lesbian partner and to cross-dress."

Only if the parents of the homosexuals agree to pay all the property taxes and expenses of the school district from now on. Otherwise, the parents of the other students, and the board they elected, are in charge.

Should the school allow kids to bring, lets say, sex animals to the prom, too? What if a student is doing his dog?

Uh, they are you fucking moron. That's how public schools are funded--through taxes that everyone in the community pays. Her parents may not be paying all of it, but they're paying just as much as every other student's parents are.

Thankfully, "sex animals" are one of the things I'm not familiar with. Perhaps you could share your apparently intimate familiarity of "sex animals" with the rest of us so that we might better understand the position of your argument.

Is the dog vicious? Is it well behaved? Is it a liability? Is it a service animal?

There's quite a few questions that would have to be answered before you could say yes to this. However, I'm going to assume that the school would not allow it simply because of the liability it presents, no matter how well behaved it is.

I, not being the school, would have no problems with a student bringing their dog if they wanted to, assuming it's well behaved and isn't vicious. I wouldn't even give a fuck if the student wanted to claim the dog was their "date" for the prom.

Right because all those things are banned because they are sexual acts and shouldn't be displayed in public (usually) now by the same token of fairness if these girls were planning to shag each other at the buffet table you'd have every right to complain, and we would have every right to watch 2 teenage lesbians fucking. Got it? However you aren't talking about banning these sexual acts, you are talking about banning the people who enjoy those acts, even if those acts aren't performed.

I've probably said this before, but years ago when I was a reporter I covered a massive storm that killed nearly three dozen people. At the home of one of the surviving families -- a good christianist couple who couldn't praise Jebus enough for saving their lives -- I happened to notice some porn videotapes amongst the rubble. From then on I started looking at each house, and rarely was I disappointed in seeing either magazines or naughty videos amongst the home debris.
And this was in the heart of the Babble Belt.

Other students could be allergic, causing serious health concerns. Also, an animal is not capable of informed consent.

Firstly, you seem to underestimate the average high school male. Big time. Second, how does a girl bringing a girl she loves equate to sex dolls and vibrators? I mean, any more than a man bringing a girl he loves...

Let the girls go. If they suddenly start fucking each other on the dance floor, your argument will have merit. Otherwise, you're just grasping at straws, and equating homosexuality to nothing more than wanting to fuck someone of the same sex at every possible moment.

I find it sad that the moment someone is considered "abnormal," their desires no longer count for anything. Paricularly when said desires are completely benign, and harm no one, save for those who choose to make it an issue.

Actually, most of them are as sentient as any human. What on Earth could lead you to believe that animals aren't sentient??

And to me, the issue is not so much that they're non-human but that they can't give informed consent. If they could, then I wouldn't really be able to see what the problem was. Same with the whole "alien" scenario. If aliens came to Earth and we could determine beyond a reasonable doubt that they could give informed consent, then I wouldn't really have a problem with people having sex with them, either (as long as it was determined that we wouldn't reproduce any fucked-up interspecies or cause harm through the act).

Yeah, I actually wondered that, too. I totally think the school was being fucktards, but I actually remember saying to myself, "Well, they could've both gone in dresses... Just sayin'."

But then again, they probably wouldn't've had a problem with the tux if she weren't bringing a girl as her date. Remember "Mean Girls"? Janis went to the prom in a purple tuxedo that matched Damian's, and the school clearly didn't have an issue, since they let her go up on stage as a Spring Fling Queen nominee with the others. I think most schools wouldn't give a shit what you wore; but because this girl brought attention to herself, they were like, "OH NOEZ!!!"

LOL. I live in Canada too, and now that I think about it, they probably WOULD let you! Those are small, right? I'm sure they'd let me bring a small plant to the prom, and I probably wouldn't even get ridiculed for it. Probably just a few people I know would ask me why I have a plant with me, and think it was funny/cute/weird, but my peers are pretty good about weirdish stuff like that. I brought a Naruto doll that I got for my birthday to school yesterday "to protect me from demons", and brought him to every class, and I received no ridicule from anyone. Once I explained why he was protecting me from demons (I had bad visions in my sleep of demons and scenes from "Paranormal Activity"), they were like, "Oh, OK." We're all used to our peers acting a little quirky now and then.

I'm not going to my prom, anyway. But if I were going, I guarantee you they wouldn't care if I wore a tux and/or brought a girl as my date. My school has no problem whatsoever with homosexuality and it formed a gay-straight alliance this year. I've done Day of Silence at school two years in a row now, and a lot of the teachers and students really support and respect us for doing it. Plus, we have same-sex marriage here, and nothing at all has changed for "the rest of us". I hadn't even realized it had been legalized until I saw a gay couple get married on TLC (I was totally ecstatic). So I really don't get what America's problem is.

I've seen high school films where boys have brought blow-up dolls as their dates. Sure, it's only on film, but it seems like that concept is more easily accepted than a woman bringing a woman.

A grown-up, or almost grown-up, person is not the same as a dog, a doll or a "sex animal", whatever that is. She's still a person, she just have different parts in her nether region.

I think it's a huge mistake for those who favor gay rights (as I do) to hang their arguments on the fact that homosexuality is ingrained rather than being a choice. I think it's bad to do that for two reasons: (1) It turns what should be a topic entirely contained within the scientific realm into a question with gigantic political consequences, which gets in the way of proper scientific objectivity. And more importantly, (2) it does nothing to get rid of the actual problem, which is the misconception on the part of various bigots that homosexuality is evil. As long as they continue believing THAT about homosexuality, then it won't matter whether or not you can convince them that it's built-in. After all, what do we do with people who commit evil acts but we know they do so because of a brain condition they can't help? Do we let them go about their business and do nothing? No. We still lock them up, but we lock them up in a mental institution instead of a prison, and have doctors try to see if they can fix what's wrong.

I fully believe that if you were to succeed at convincing homophobes that homosexuallity is not a choice, that wouldn't help matters at ALL - then they'd just start pushing to force homosexuals into institutions to try to "correct" their "condition". "for their own good". Instead of blaming gays for doing evil, they'd pity them for being born with a condition that makes them do evil. That's not an improvement. At All. That kind of thinking leads to the sort of sad story like the "treatment" of computer science pioneer Alan Turing (look it up if you haven't heard of it).

The right fight to wage is to entirely remove the "is homosexuality a choice?" question from the moral debate altogether and leave that up to science to decide entirely objectively without the scientists having to have any worry about the social consequences of publishing their results. It's not relevant to the question of whether there's anything morally wrong with homosexuality, which there isn't.

Fight the argument on the grounds of consent. Show that there's no such thing as the "victim" in consensual homosexuality, and that's why morality should have nothing to say against it.

Then the question of whether a sexual desire for one's own sex is a choice or not becomes morally irrelevant. Who cares? It's still perfectly fine either way.

Ignoring the "there is no victim so I'm not doing anything wrong by bring gay" angle and instead going after the "You have to allow me to be gay because I can't help it" angle is a huge mistake. That way leads people back to the days of homosexuality being something psychologists had to try to "treat" and find a "fix" for. (Since you're still allowing the bigots to think there's something evil about it - just an evil you can't help.)
