Hate to disagree with a lot of you, but as a teacher I can tell you the precious little butterfly, never hit your kids, praise them and never grade them makes that college transition hurt. Well, hurt those of us at the front of the room... I've been threatened, screamed at, and turned in to the dean for - gasp - grading homework instead of giving everyone an A for showing up to a few classes.

Sure, there is more than one way to discipline a child other than a spanking. If the parents follow through with those, great. However it seems that the way it used to be you got your ass tanned just once and you listened to your parents after that. (Or learned not to get caught. Either way, there are life skills there.)

Don't make me laugh. Aside from wasting all of that time and money at church, fundies are the least likely to live good lives. Look at any study of jail population proportions, look at any study of divorce rate, look at any study of teen pregnancy rates, look at all of the televangelist scandals, look at history at the Inquisition at the Crusades at the censorship of differing ideas. Christianity does not automatically make you live a good life. In fact, it's likely to make you live a life of guilt for just being human.

And any god that would do that is an immoral jackass. Why the hell would any being punish people for just being wrong?

Yes, it's called empathy and it's what makes you feel bad about doing bad things and thus makes you not want to do those things ever again. Of course, some people's conscience is broken so they have to have an authority figure handing down absolutist commands for them to follow even if this authority is entirely fictional.

Have you ever read the fucking Bible? Oh wait, you're a fundie so probably not. Anyway, god is NOT peaceful there and far from everlasting peace, that god can't wait for an excuse to kill people or order his people to do so. Hell, he even went through the trouble of hardening the pharaoh's heart so he could do all of the plagues including the one where he kills all of the first born who had nothing to do with the pharaoh's 'decision' (if you can call it a decision).

I for one am glad that the author of the original comment is doing GODLY raising of her kids by spanking them. SPARE THE ROD SPOIL THE CHILD! Have you ever heard of that.

Yeah, I've heard of it and it's incredibly stupid. You can raise a child with discipline without ever touching them (I mean in a violent way; touching as a form of bonding is another story).

Kids are made to be spanked and should be spanked until they are adults!

Kids are made to be kids and sometimes they will make mistakes. That's a part of life. beating a child doesn't make them automatically into good people. In fact, if you fundies are any indication it might have the opposite effect. Plus, kids have to learn that morality is not just about avoiding punishment.

IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO TEACH MORALS AND GOD APPROVES OF IT!

You're god also approves of slavery and genocide so that's not a good moral example. However, you're right that coercion is something he's rather fond of. Also, as I mentioned before, kids can learn morality without being whacked and, in fact, it's preferable that they learn to do the right thing because it's the right thing not because they're trying to avoid being clobbered.

But what would you know about MORALS, you are all just atheists!

Actually, we understand that morality isn't just about avoiding punishment. It's ultimately about maintaining a cooperative society and improving everyone's standard of living to the best of our ability. In fact, we can be moral even when nobody is watching. Yes, there are bad atheists that aren't moral, but they're in the minority. Most atheists and I'd say most theists know this and it's just the fundies who need a celestial carrot and stick to know they're not supposed to hurt other people. In short, YOU need to believe in a hell in order to behave yourself as you have shown by your constant insistence on it. And in the end that reveals your morality to be the defective one.

This person sounds a lot like my FIL.

In fact, just the other night, my husband took an Ambien and it made his sleepwalk and progress through his past. In one of his stages, he reverted to a 10-year-old hiding in bed. He didn't recognize me but told me to be quiet or his dad would come in and beat him.

To comfort him, I told him that my dad was a cop and was going to prevent further abuse. He very sincerely asked, "You mean, your dad doesn't beat you?"

Then said asswipe of a father has the nerve to go behind my back and tell my younger 12-year-old brother that he should be beaten at least once monthly for all of the "evil sinful things boys do".

Actually, it's there, but not in the exact wording. (It's part of several of the proverbs).

That being said, fundie does not seem to have understood the point of the movie/book. Or, you know, have watched it at all.

I mean, Max is a little, little kid, and kind of still hurting over a lot of things in the film (a divorce, rejection from his sister and her friends), and he acts out--like children do--and bites his mother. He knows this is wrong because he runs away to not get in trouble.

He already knows its wrong. What will spanking him do?

And dude, fuck you. What in the hell does political affiliation have to do with the quality of how someone raises a child?

Pascal was a pussy, and most fundies think his wager to be the greatest reason to be a christian. Pascal didnt worship god out of love. He worshipped him out of fear of Hell and taking the safe bet. Thats what pussies do.

Ive got news for you bluewolf... I was a BRAT... a fucking little devil when I was a child. I was very mean to my mother because she spoiled me and gave me everything I could want. But she NEVER laid a single hand on me... and in time as I grew up... I realized as I got older how much of a rotten ass I was to her.. and changed... ON MY OWN. By learning from my mistakes... and now to this day we live together and I take care of her. I didnt need your God or her hand of discipline to do this for me either... I REALIZED IT ON MY OWN. AND I TREAT HER LIKE A QUEEN NOW to make up for all my horridness I put on her when I was a toddler to a teen.

That happens more often with children of fundy parents (or non-fundies who believe in regular corporal punishment) who are subject to regular spankings as advocated by brain-less bluewolf. I personally knew a little piece of shit during my school days who was subject to regular corporal punishment, and he was not only a bully who made my life a living hell for 8 years, he was also a habitual convicted criminal.

Goes to show that fundy/rightwing parents DO NOT know how to parent. Their idea of 'discipline' is that 'I can beat you up because I'm bigger'.
