I have. My daughter is nine and we have taught her that it is wrong and absolutely not allowed in our family, just like alcohol or drugs or tobacco. Worked for us.

Y'know, kids grow up. They start questioning why things are "wrong". Alcohol isn't inherently wrong if it's used responsibly (ie- not using it to drink away one's problems, getting smashed every night) and using tobacco is the user's choice and should be used if the user understands the potential consequences. Good luck figuring out what's "wrong" with homosexuality.

Also, nine year-olds don't understand things that complex. If they say they do, they're really just going through the motions and saying what they think you want to hear. There's also the fact that she's going to meet homosexuals at some point in her life. Sure, she'll be able to avoid most of them, but if one is, say, a boss? A co-worker? A friend?

I hate her prejudice, but at least she's actually telling her daughter that homosexuality exists, which is a step above the typical "I CAN'T LET MY KIDS KNOW THERE ARE GAY PEOPLE OR THEY'LL ALL TURN QUEER IMMEDIATELY!" drivel that we get in the mainpage quotes.

That said, telling your daughter that homosexuality is "not allowed in this house" is not a good idea. She's nine. She probably hasn't undergone puberty and may not fully realize which gender she's attracted to yet. If she turns out to be a lesbian, she'll either repress it for years and be miserable, commit suicide because she thinks she's a monster, or have a loud, angry confrontation with you that results in hurt feelings and a broken family.

Gay people aren't nearly as big a threat to the American family as homophobia is.

The problem with nowadays society is that many parents or young adults in general, Christian or not, are buying the myth that kids nowadays are not innocent any longer, bla, bla, bla........
Let´s see. It´s true that kids are more OUTSPOKEN than previous generations about topics concerning violence or sex and that they´re cheekier. Maybe. But that doesn´t correlate with a real and comprehensive knowledge on the topic. The fact that homosexuality is not taboo is a fact but for children of that age is reduced to "Heather has two mommies", or, in some cutting edge cases, "hey, Ricky Martin is gay", but nothing more. Since they´re not sexually active and haven´t develop their sexuality, they don´t fully understand the implications of that. So, to say to a girl who is nine years old that is bad and so on, like tobacco or alcohol is not going to be effective when later on on puberty she may realise that she is either lesbian or bisexual or, which has happened to many of us, may have doubts or come to contact with homosexual people, which may arise questions, even if she´s not homosexual herself.
That is, I suspect, one of the reasons why the virginity pledge and all that stuff doesn´t work for 88% of the people who do it.

You've got reasons for the above. Still waiting for your logic on homosexuality's disapproval there.

See, my mom, while being pretty conservative, pretty much told my siblings and I the truth when it came to things like sexuality and drinking, and so forth. We turned out fairly responsible and fine because she knew early that eventually we'd want reasoning.

So she gave us reasons. Smoking's unhealthy, and so is excessive drinking. Unprotected sex is unsafe, and the act itself should be reserved for a significant other whom you care deeply for.

By the way, my mom's a pretty conservative Christian. She's remarkably open-minded, tho (one of her aquaintances is a MTF trans person, and I've never seen her treat this lady as anything less than anyone else).

The first time I heard about homosexuality, it was from her. She was not a fan of it, but she said something that'll be ingrained in me forever.
