Many good things have been done by people who, in addition to being smart and ambitious, also happened to be Christians. Christianity itself, however, has rarely done anything except drag its feet kicking and screaming at any sign of independent intelligence or progress.

Personally, I'm just going to take umbrage at that "Latin Americans became civilized thanks to the Conquistadores" bit, because decimated with extreme prejudice is just not the same.

"Spain (my country) is rich and prosperous thanks to Catholicism, not because of Atheism"
When my protestant country, Britain, kicked your armadas ass was that because we were protestant?
Your country grew rich through looting gold from the natives in the Americas at the point of a gun. Nothing more, Nothing less.
4/5/2010 7:28:03 AM
"Spain (my country) is rich and prosperous thanks to Catholicism, not because of Atheism. Please atheist do not quote Christian nations."
-Not generous subsidies from the EU then?
4/5/2010 7:33:24 AM
Funny how atheist Sweden scores 80 on quality of life while christian Spain get 68. It's almost like atheism improves your country or something.
4/5/2010 7:46:14 AM
Correlation != causation.
Also, the Vikings made the best ships for their time.
4/5/2010 7:51:49 AM
The Bible has no knowledge in it. And it certainly didn't save Sweden in any way.
Oh, and Spain's economy is in worse condition than Sweden's.
4/5/2010 7:55:57 AM
Watch out, Shia. Erik the Red just strapped on a jetpack and blasted out of his grave in order to punch you in the face.
As to Spanish prosperity - You should know that Al-Andalus was a center of scientific thought in Europe, giving rise to secular philosopher-scientists like Averroes, and that the religious expulsion of Jews and Muslims caused Spain to languish behind the rest of Europe.
4/5/2010 7:58:27 AM
The INDIANS were savage?
Wow I've got my history all mucked up! I thought the white man came to America, raped the native women, murdered the native men, intentionally (and unintentionally) infected them with smallpox et al, stole their land and raped it of it's resources, massacred them when they tried to fight for what was rightfully theirs then shoved them on reservations.
Methinks you don't understand the meaning of the word savage. The world would be a much happier place without ANY of the Abrahamic religions (ffs we'd probably be living on colonies on Mars by now).
4/5/2010 8:07:27 AM
@toothache: gold star my friend. Well done! :-D
@Big Jilm: that's true. Also there is evidence they made have landed in "America" thousands of years before the Christian invaders.
4/5/2010 8:09:35 AM
There's a reason why the Spanish Inquisition is so infamous, and it's not because Christians in Spain were "elightened."
4/5/2010 8:17:23 AM
Genetic fallacy 101
4/5/2010 8:18:41 AM
By the way, is Francisco Franco still dead?
4/5/2010 8:22:21 AM
Indeed. The vikings landed in what is now Newfoundland LONG before the French or the English every even thought of heading out there.
4/5/2010 8:25:06 AM
You ignorant Spanish fuck.
Sweden, just like Norway and Denmark were FORCED to become christians, they were christened by the tip of the sword.
"Convert or die!" was the choice given, what would you choose?
4/5/2010 8:30:44 AM
JSS"Spain (my country) is rich and prosperous thanks to Catholicism"
Yeah I heard the fanatics did bring a lot to that country.
4/5/2010 8:33:06 AM
Yet again, just because a Christian did something good does not instantly make CHristianity right.
4/5/2010 8:38:44 AM
And here's me, thinking Spain got its catholic treasures by confiscating everything from jews, muslims and other 'apostates' in the time of Ferdinand and Isabella.
If that is your definition of "becoming rich and prosperous thanks to Catholicism", I think I'll pass on the Catholic bits.
4/5/2010 8:47:55 AM
Spain (my country) is rich and prosperous thanks to Catholicism.....
Honey, your country is circling the economic wastepipe (like Ireland, Italy, Greece - all v religious countries) desperate for bailouts from the other euro-states.
4/5/2010 8:54:19 AM
Tell me again who brought about the Dark Ages?
4/5/2010 8:55:54 AM
History disagrees with you. Actually, about half of your message is blatant counter-truth, the other half being "merely" false.
"Why do atheist pride countries such Sweden when the former came to be thanks to Christianity?"
False. Scandinavia was still pagan when the kingdom of Sweden was founded.
"Countries have become elightened thanks to the Christian religions."
Counter-truth. Christian expansion coincides with the stagnation and fall of the Roman empire.
"If it weren't for the bible Sweden would have been another underdeveloped country."
Unprovable, unargumentated, meaningless assertion. It's not really false ; it's not even false ; it doesn't even manage to be false.
"The Vikings were ignorant, and the bible and its teaching brought them knowledge. "
False. The Bible isn't a science book, and contains no worldly knowledge, whether true or false. On the other hand, the Chrisitan dogma, which
was is loosely based on the Scripture, has been an hindrance to scientific progress for centuries.
"Spain (my country) is rich and prosperous thanks to Catholicism, not because of Atheism."
Awful, tragic, unforgivable counter-truth. Please learn the recent history of your own fucking country. And please thank your secular democratic government and the secular European Union for the economic renewal of Spain after years of Catholic dictatorship.
"The U.S. was discovered thanks to Christians"
Hilariously false. The first Europeans to set foot on the American continent were... pagan Norsemen. Oh, the irony.
"Latin Americans became civilized thanks to the Conquistadores."
Absurd counter-truth, bordering on nonsense. Do you even know who Latin Americans are ? Hint : they're not "Indians" by any means, though they have many native South American ancestors. Second hint : never asked why they're called Latino or Hispanic, why they all speak Spanish or Portuguese, or why they all have Spanish-sounding surnames ?
4/5/2010 8:56:43 AM
Atheists came to be, thanks to Christianity? Please learn some grammar before you attack my country.
If it wasn't for the Bible. The Bible, although consisting of several books, is still only counted as one entity.
The Vikings were ignorant, yes, and religious to boot. However, they had a written language that survives to this day, they somehow managed to instill fear in people all through Europe, and they found the American continent a few hundred years before the Spanish and the Portuguese. The Vikings also managed to leave the American continent much like they found it, in contrast with the Conquistadors who killed off about half the population.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather be a pagan Native American and live, than a dead Christian under Spanish rule.
4/5/2010 8:59:18 AM
Whenever I hear from morons like you that Christianity saved the American Natives from their savage ways I want to puke, and I'm not even a Native American.
Your ignorance of the savagery of the invading forces from Europe against the American Natives (both North and South) is boundless. They were Christians in name only. In reality, they were ignorant and greedy opportunists looking to make their fortunes, and damn anything that got in their way.
4/5/2010 9:01:28 AM
Watch what you say about the Vikings.
Even if Farve retires this year, i'm sure Tavaris Jackson is up to taking his place, and with their great recieving corps how could he fail? Also the loss of Chester Taylor isn't a big deal since we have offensive rookie of the year Percy Harvin.
Oh, THOSE Vikings.
4/5/2010 9:06:52 AM
Technology aside, the Indians were generally more civilized than the Europeans.
No, I owe nothing to your god, your religion, or your country. Get bent.
