Gordon Bennett, if Obama is what passes for socialist in the US I dread to think what the Republicans are like. In our country, for example, it was the Conservative government that thought up the National Health Service. Obama isn't really that left wing.

No, it wasn't. It was first proposed by a Liberal, Beveridge, and implemented by Attlee's Labour government. Churchill and the Conservative Party opposed it.
