Maybe it's okay for people who want to cut down on the chance of a baby screwing up their lives...?
Also, how effective do you think birth control would be thousands of years ago, if there even was any? Which is another point: medicine was not very good back then. Diseases were widespread, and people died regularly. Fertility was encouraged to keep the population up. Nowadays, we have a little thing called OVERpopulation. It's not a good thing.
