In some respects I agree with Christian. This is somewhat of a war.
For those of you that think there is a clear cut division between mainstream religion and extremism, think again. The problem is not who is extreme and who isn't, the problem is faith itself. When your world view is based on an illogical foundation, violence and extremism is inevitable because you can not sit down with your adversaries and reasonably discuss your differences...because those differences are not based in reason to begin with. The only way to be "right" is to eventually kill the other guy. Seriously, think about it, how in hell are the Muslims and Jews ever going to resolve their differences? The both believe that they are the rightful possessors of certain "holy land" and there is no way that either side is going to convince the other that their claims are more valid...because neither is valid to begin with.
I will also add that it is not only religion that leads to this intractability, but it is the most convenient label. There are other ideologies that yield the same result such as nationalism.
The bottom line though is that for this world to ever find true peace, religion must go, and it will. It is just a matter of time because this is not a conspiracy. It is an unstoppable social force. The big question is how painful and violent the transformation will be as the world moves from a society based on myths to one based on reason.
By the looks of it is going to suck pretty bad.

Though I'll admit, if religion does go I won't miss it. It'll have to go on its own though.
